Mexico City Museums for English speaking tourists

We will be in Mexico City for 5 touring days before Christmas. We were thinking about using guides for 3 days, but were hoping we could see the most important museums on our own. What is the experience for English speaking tourists? Are their audio-guides in English? While the Anthropology Museum/Castle are a must, we want to go to a few other worthwhile museums. Suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks for those of you who take the time to respond.

A very english speaking tourist here (as in, "too stupid to learn another language"), and never had a problem anywhere in Mexico City museums. Most have english translations, and where audio guides are available they are in multiple languages. Most in the tourism industry speak at least some english as well, less so outside the city (we also spent three days in Puebla).

I did use a guide onl,y for tours - quite easy to get around by yourself.

We toured the Frida Kahlo home, the Palacio Nacional, Templo Mayor, and anthropology museum with no trouble and only very limited Spanish. We did not get audio guides - I'm not sure any were available. We had a guide for the trip to Teotihuacan which was well worth it. We LOVED Mexico City - have a great trip!

Scarsdale:

Even though we have been doing at least two Mexico trips per year since 1998, we have to admit that our command of Spanish is embarrassing! We have an aversion to tours or tour guides but every single Museo in Mexico City made their presentation in such a manner that an English speaker felt comfortable and was able to learn and experience! The Museo of Anthropology was not only World Class but massive. We spent one day and only managed to cover one floor. We reserved the other floor for another trip rather than trying to do an incomplete dash through. It is our understanding that Mexico City has more museums than any other city in the world and maybe we will have the opportunity to enjoy each and every one on future trips?

I found the Museum of folk art excellent. No understanding of spanish needed to enjoy the beautiful pieces on display.

Also the sponsor of the Giant Alebrijes Parade held each October:

The parade goes from the Zocalo to a point on Ave Reforma where the Alebrijes are put on display for about a week. The winning entries are collected by the Museo and they assemble traveling displays that are sent around Mexico for the citizens to enjoy.

Out of the seven museos we managed to visit, this was one of our favorites!
