My wife and I live in Las Vegas and are wanting to visit San Miguel de Allende for about 10 days. We plan on going next year, September through November. I know we can fly into Leon and it is a lot closer to San Miguel but we thought we would combine our trip with a 3-4 night visit to either Mexico City or Guadalajara to experience a larger Mexican city and experience some local Mexican culture along with some ethnic food, parks, museums and local people. After spending 10 days or so in San Miguel we thought we would then fly home to Las Vegas from the Leon airport if the airlines would allow it. We have mileage with American Airlines and would be flying with them. We are well traveled in Mexico and other countries such as Costa Rica, Caribbean and Argentina and have used trip advisor as a resource for all of those and we love the advice we get from travelers as well as the local experts. I grew up in New York City and speak Spanish pretty well. My wife is from El Salvador and speaks Spanish fluently. We have never been to Mexico City, Guadalajara or San Miguel de Allende. We have heard that they are all beautiful. Is it dangerous or intimidating traveling around either large city. We would appreciate and advice and thoughts from the trip advisor experts and travelers about both
Which do you think we would enjoy more for 3-4 days, Mexico City or Guadalajara? How long and how much money is the bus ride from either city to San Miguel? Are there many buses each day from either and it an easier trip from either city? Is there a direct bus from both or do we have to transfer and take 2 buses? Is it safer (specifically problems with crime and drugs) to take the bus from either city to San Miguel? Finally, what parts of each city should we stay, preferably in the central part of the city preferably downtown or a safe trendy or colonial quaint part of the city.
We love Mexico, the people, the beauty, the history and the culture. Thanks for all your help and advice!
