That's what I initially thought, Michael. "Cuetes" is probably an intentional misspelling of the word "cohetes", or fireworks. (Say "cohete" several times very rapidly and you'll soon be saying "cuete"). But, there is also a popular Mexican slang usage for the word that refers to a "drunk". So, I'm not so sure if were talking fireworks, or drunks! :-)

Here's what I mean...

From the "official" dictionary of the Spanish language (RAE), the first definition of "cohete" is a firework. But the sixth definition, used in Mexico and Uruguay, is the effect of getting drunk.

No Michael has it wrong, even after 40 years living here.

It means, roughly translated, Buddies and 'Tipplers' or simply 'Drinkers'

Thanks J.R. and Michael,

So, the name "Cuates y Cuetes" is a very clever play on words!

Maria chose the name, Cuates y Cuetes, which means pals and tipsy folks because she wanted an amusing name for her restaurant.

Michael, 'tippler' is a semi slang word, [Perhaps back-formation from Middle English tipeler, bartender.]

You finally found what I answered yesterday. Some words in your native language have two, or more, meanings :)
