Puerto Vallarta Car Rental Companies

Does anyone have a recommendation for a car rental company in PV? Are there any car rental companies that I should not book with?

Cabo is different, not the same as Mainland. CC insurance doesn't cover liability in Mexico, which is mandatory.

Go with Gecko as they are not only good but north of town specialists. If they happen to be booked, try Amigo Rent Car in Bucerias.

Sorry about the horses!

I forgot to mention that the credit cards do not cover the mandatory $50,000. third party liability insurance that must be purchased at the time of rental. I've checked with insurance agencies in Mexico to see if I could purchase a policy outside the rental system but the answer has been a resounding no. I guess the rental companies have that one nicely locked up.

Cabo is the same as the mainland JR, you must purchase the mandatory liability insurance there as well.

Your card insurance won't work here.

The only rental place I can recommend is Gecko.

I went with Budget at $30.00 per day. I used my credit card for the damage and theft coverage, but had to purchase the liability insurance. As JRinPV said your credit cards will not cover the liability insurance.

Avoid Usave Car rental across from the airport in Puerto Vallarta. We reserved a full size car for December 24th. Iwas picking up 4 adults from the airport. When I arrived the lady behind the counter told me they did not have any full size cars but I could have a miniture Dodge Atos for the same price as the full size. Such a deal!. The Atos is cramped for 4 people and almost does not have a trunk. When she filled out the rental form she indicated the gas tank was half full. It was not even showing 1 bar. When I asked that they fill the tank so I could bring it back full, they refused saying I should just bring it back empty. USave also charges $25 per day for the same mandatory insurance that almost all the other rental companies charge $15 dollars per day for. There explanation " this is how we keep the car rental charge so low". Their final scam is the exchange rate. Everything is done is US dollars up until you pay. They take the going USD / Peso exchange rate and add 13% to it and then multiply that by the USD price because the credit card amount must be in Pesos.

In summary:

1) Bait and switch on the car with no price reduction for the smaller car

2) Dishonest gas guage reading

3) They are perfectly happy to send you down the road with an empty gas tank

4) Grossly overcharging for the mandatory insurance

5) Dishonest exchange rate.

I go to PV 3 or 4 times a year and always rent a car. USAVE's advertised prices are cheap (since they don't advertise their insurance rip-off) but there is a total lack of integrity in this company.

My suggestion - save yourself a lot of grief - go with one of the reputable companies like Fox Rent a Car.

I understand wanting to warn people. But, did you accept the car?
