I could not tell you for sure but I would venture to guess that they are very traditional in PV and would only have an ACTUAL midnight mass. Most of our culture has reduced tradition for convienence.

an old article i had posted on another forum

December 1 - 12 Pilgrimages

Honor Vallarta's Virgin de Guadalupe

From the first to the twelfth days of

December, most cities and town of

Mexico will celebrate their annual

pilgrimages or "peregrinacion"

to their local churches. But no

where more fervently than in

Puerto Vallarta, The Virgin de

Guadalupe not only Mexico's

patron saint, but the patron saint

of Puerto Vallarta and our main

church named in her honor.

During these "Twelve Days

of Christmas" you will witness

scores of Mexicans marching

piously down Calle Juarez to

Our Lady of Guadalupe Church,

located opposite City Hall in

Central Vallarta. Many beautiful

loats depicting the appearance

of the Virgin to Juan Diego and

the birth of Jesus accompany

the pilgrims, as well as candles,

music and song.

Vallartenses take these 12

days as the most important ones

during the Christmas holiday.

And you, too, may be moved to

join in! You can arrange to do so,

ahead of time, with a restaurant

you know, perhaps, or the condo

where you are staying. Or, do so

spontaneously, at the moment, by

politely inding your place among

the Crowd. Ideally you would be

wearing white and carrying a lit

white candle, although that's not

mandatory.

You can purchase a booklet

called, "Fiestas Guadalupanas"

at the top of the church steps near

the main entrance; it costs 10

pesos. It's a very handy guide to

this event, outlining when each of

the families, businesses, unions,

colonias (neighborhoods),

schools and organizations will

be processing to the church -

which is where every one of these

pilgrimages ends, to the acclaim

of church bells and fireworks.

The schedule for masses during

this period is also included.

People march pretty much

around the clock, starting at 6

am. And then around 6 pm Calle

Juarez is closed to vehicular

trafic, so pedestrians can stroll,

sit on the sidewalk and watch the

passing parades. And what an

abundance of street foods there

are to enjoy!! (Be aware that buses

through El Centro get re-routed

during this time.)

The culminating day of the

pilgrimages, December 12, is the

most colorful and important, with

hotels, cowboys, Aztec dancers,

music, song, and many bands.

Go early and get yourself a good

position to watch the goings on;

some restaurants overlook the

festivities. Pictures can, of course,

be taken. But keep in mind that

these pilgrimages are religious

processions and should be

treated reverently.

Also on the southside Paradise Church (on Pulpito, just up the street from the la Palapa restaurant) in the past has offered a Christmas Eve candlelight vigil, the church nondenominational, does missionary work and helps with the poor.

...depending on where you are staying, there is a similar nondenominational missionary style church near the airport with a large palapa roof that offers similar services and a get together after.
