South Padre Island to Monterrey

Hi

We are planning on driving from South Padre Island to Monterrey for a 2 or 3 N stay some time in July 2014.

We would have a rental car at SPI - but we cannot drive this in to Mexico, as the rental does not permit us to do so. So what are the other options? Can we rent a car after entering Mexico and return at the same location?

Any thoughts would be welcome.

It would be much simpler to drive to McAllen, take a trans-border bus to Monterrey, leaving your rental at the bus station, and then rent a car once you are in Monterrey. The logistics involved in crossing the border, renting a car in Reynosa or Brownsville and then driving to Monterrey would be a real inconvenience, to me at least.

Grupo Senda has a location in McAllen and I assume they have direct service to Monterrey from there. Based on what I see, you might have to book your trip McAllen-Reynosa and transfer to a bus to Monterrey, but the company can better inform you about that. There are multiple carriers that provide service between Reynosa and Monterrey (probably 50 buses a day) so once you get to the bus station in Reynosa you will a lot of options.

You can make a reservation on-line or call SENDA's toll free US number 1-800-733-7330. Here is the link to the website.
