visiting TJ Next Month

Hi There, we are a bunch of guys in san deigo for a marketing convention and are planning to visit TJ as we have heard a lot about it. Anyone recently been there.. we would like to generally look around, hit 1 or 2 bars, have some local food and come back to SD before it is too late.

I heard about Zone norte. some good and some bad stuff. Is that where all the bars are.. is it safe to go there with all the recent news about all the drug violence and so on.. We do not want to do any drugs or anything like that .. just have a nice time for a few hours without getting into any trouble. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated

Go mid day and return before dark, you will be fine. Not that you can't stay later, it's just that as darkness falls your exposure increases ;)

If you want more detail on "entertainment" send me a PM, it's not appropriate to post here ;)

Drugs have little to do with the major risks to visitors to Tijuana. The people involved with promoting tourism to Mexico make a point of telling people that if they are not involved with drugs there is little risk. Nothing could be further from the truth. The major risks to visitors are from the high crime rate for robbery, extortion, car thefts and kidnapping. Just last Friday, an American student was kidnapped, beaten and held hostage in Tijuana. She was lucky because the kidnappers asked her family in the US for $200,000 ransom. The FBI traced the call, which was from somebody in the US, and got the caller to confess to her location. Mexican police were notified and freed her.

Zona Rio is a high crime area of Tijuana.
