2 nights in the Okanagan Valley - what should we see?

Hi

My husband and I are planning a trip from Calgary to Vancouver in July. So far our route is:

Arrive Calgary and pick up rental car. Drive to Banff for 3 nights, Jasper 3 night, (travelling the IP in both directions), Golden 1 night, Revelstoke 2 nights, Kelowna\Okanagan Valley 2 nights and Vancouver 4 nights before our flight home to the UK.

My question is what should we do in Okanagan Valley? We don't particularly want to visit wineries or play golf? We like walking, cycling and beautiful scenery. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Also what would be the best place to stay? Many thanks.

Hi

you may want to look at staying in Penticton and renting some bicycles to cycle the KVR (Kettle Valley Railway) which is trail that uses the old rail bed to visit the village of Naramata and all the orchards/vineyards along the way.

If you are there on a Saturday there is lot of activity at the Farmers-Craft Market on Main Street along with something happening in one of the parks.

Take a stroll in the Japanese Garden behind the art gallery and walk along the waterfront.

You also could do a drive loop that takes you to the Dominion Observatory in White Lake then head south to Osoyoos to visit the Desert Interpretive Centre at N'mip resort area. and back on the east side to stop at Burrowing Owl winery for a climb up the tower to get a great vista of the valley. http://goo.gl/maps/R2zl7

and what is your budget for accommodation and do you want to look at B&Bs

Yes, look at taking a cycling tour in the Myra Canyon. I know there are companies that run these, and it might be easier than trying to rent bicycles and get to the trailhead on your own.

Another great day out is the Steam Train

I would also advise looking at staying in Penticton, Naramata, Summerland or Oliver. I actually really like Oliver, but its not lakeside, which a lot of people want. I would plan to drive down to Osoyous one day and visit the Desert Centre and have lunch at Burrowing Owl, which provides spectacular views across the valley.

Oh, actually, you could loop around to Keremeos from Osoyous and visit the Grist Mill and perhaps the Hedley Mine.

Thanks so much - sounds great.! Our budget is up to approx $200 per night so probably a nice b&b would be better. What is the weather like in July?

It is typically very hot and dry in July.
