Ao Nang as a base to explore?

Hi all,

My wife and I were planning on 8 days somewhere on the Andaman coast, a mix of beach days, cocktails amd exploring. But where would be the best base to explore from? Ao Nang sounds convenient but is it overly commercialised? We'd like to see PhiPhi, the Phangnga bay, Railay, and see a little of Phuket - if anyome has any great ideas for an itinerary or a place to stay, we'd love to hear them!

Thanks in advance!

Ao Nang is far less commercial than Patong, it has a totally different atmosphere, more relaxed and laid back - if you want it to be more relaxed then Ao Nang may be the best option for you.

I love both places for different reasons but you can do the tours you are lookong at from both.

We always stay on Nopparath Thara beach next to Ao Nang beach, which is quite and "Thai" with a reasonable choice of restaurants but still with all the activities of Ao Nang within easy reach. The small harbour where speedboats and ferries depart is at the far end of the beach and there is a longtail boat station at the other end so it's rather convenient for excursions.

Hey...my wife and I are doing the same. We're starting things off in Phuket for 3 days (Kamala Beach) then boating over to Krabi and we can't decide on where to set-up a "base" but from what I've read (inside and outside of Tripadvisor) is that Ao Nang has a lot to offer and seems like the logical choice. We've allocated about 5 nights (after Phuket) and are hopeful to do a bunch of hopping around...curious to hear what you've seen/heard thus far.
