What are "Bay" beaches? Which are the best ones to swim?

Forgive the stupid question, I'm new to Long Island. I read postings saying that "Bay" beaches have clearer water for swimming/possibly snorkeling than "Ocean" beaches. What are the "Bay" beaches? Where are they? Which are the best ones? Which are the easiest to get to from NYC?

THANK YOU so much in advance for any replies!!!

Along the south shore of Long Island are a series of barrier islands where most of the south shore beaches are located. The water between Long Island and these barrier islands are bays.

The easiest to access from NYC is probably Jones Beach. You can take the LIRR to Freeport and then take the bus from the Freeport train station. Be sure to check the bus schedule because the bus is seasonal and will be ending soon. If you have a car, you have more options.

Keep in mind, none of these will really have snorkeling. The water might be a little clearer than an ocean beach, but you will not be able to see much. I do not think you are going to find what you are looking for.
