Fall stay

Wanted to stay in the NY area and see the turning of the leaves this fall. Is Long Island a good place to stay for this event? Proximity to these areas? Thanks. Rick,

Long Island does not have good fall foliage. The nature of the soil is different, and different types of trees grow there. They don't turn pretty colors.

You'll see a bit of color here and there from trees planted in yards and town squares, but nothing like you see on the mainland, where the colorful trees are "native" to the area and growing wild.

Better to go"upstate" New York or to New England. The further north, the bolder the colors. metro-north railroad to Wassaic or fold Spring, for example.
