What about cell phone coverage on Long Island? Are local rental plans available? Will US phones/plans work?

Much will depend on where you are in Long Island and if your US carrier has a roaming agreement with the Bahamas, so there is no easy answer to your question.

Coverage is good in most area, so getting a signal is the easy part. There is a local BTC (Bahamas Telephone Company) office on Long Island, so you should be able to find a local plan to suit you, but this may mean setting up local service. Depending on how long you are staying, this may be a bit incovenient (and expensive)

If you only need the phone to check in with family at home, what many people do is set up a Vonage or similar account, which you can dial the Bahamas for no additional charge beyond the monthly rate, and forward the number to your hotel room.

Hope this is of help to you.

Two years ago, our Verizon worked well at Cape Santa Maria, on the North part of the Island. Previously (3 years ago) ATT worked well.

If you are a little worried about it, get Skype on your computer. It is free computer to computer, world wide. It is owned by Google and is a very good product. I talk to Europe and Africa regualarly with good results.
