Long Island in December

We are planning a trip to Stella Maris over the Christmas New Year time and would like to hear from anyone who has been there around that time of year. Curious what the diving is like, the temperature and any other information. Thanks!

1. Re: Long Island in December

We are normally there just a few weeks earlier, first week of December or last of november.

At that time, the weather is usually fairly calm, but you can have some fronts come through. The water in our experience is about 76 degrees by early December. Not bad at all, and we only use thinner suits, I have an old Polartec, and my wife uses a 2mm. This year was kinda unusual, as we were also there in mid January and the water then was only slightly cooler, about 75. We snorkeled without suits.

The air temps are normally 78 to 82 about then, with some cooler temps, lower 70's, when a front blows through. It will be quite a bit warmer than further north at say, Nassau or Abaco. We don't like Abaco past October until May because of the cold.

Let them know your diving desires in advance.
