Finger Lakes in June

My family: wife, 18 year old daughter, and I are headed to the Finger Lakes region for 4 nights in June. We are renting a house on Seneca Lake. I have a couple of questions:

1. Wineries. Do you have to be 21 to take a tour at the wineries?

2. Weather in June. Is the water too cool to go swimming at the Lake and at the hiking trails in Watkins Glenn and Ithaca areas? Keep in mind, we live in SC so we may have a different gauge of what is too cool to go swimming...lol

3. Can we rent jet skis to take out on Seneca Lake?

Most Finger Lakes wineries will allow families with Under 21's to visit the tasting room and go on any tours. Obviously they won't be served alcoholic beverages but often they have local grape or fruit juice to offer. Check out the following for links to most SL wineries and check individual policies: http://www.senecalakewine.com/

Much is weather-dependent, but I think Southerners would find local swimming pretty bracing in June. Remember that Seneca Lake is ~600 feet deep in the middle and retains cold Winter water until late in the Summer. There may be shallows or pools in local streams that you would splash around in on a hot day.

There are relatively few marinas on SL and of those not many rent jet skis. One that apparently does is the Anchor Inn & Marina in Seneca Lake. You can also rent them on nearby Keuka Lake if desired.

I agree w/ROCtraveller that the water will likely be too cold in the lake and even in the creek swimming areas.

The state parks will be spectacular at that time of year - be sure to hit all three in the Ithaca area (Taughannock, Buttermilk, Robert Treman) if you can. There is also a great weekend farmers market in Ithaca at the foot of Cayuga Lake that is worth checking out.

Yes, the Ithaca Farmers Market is wonderful and it's open on both Saturdays and Sundays. You can also rent boats at either end of Seneca Lake at: http://www.roysmarina.net/ or http://www.glenharbormarina.com/. Something else that you might be interested in is exploring the Seneca-Cayuga Canal that connects the two lakes at the north end. Fuzzy Guppies is located right on the canal and rents canoes and kayaks: http://www.fuzzyguppies.com/. The entire canal is a no-wake zone and it's really very scenic.

Swimming-depends on how much you like to swim. If you have a wetsuit and insist on swimming-bring it. We took a surf less in Myrtle Beach in March 2014 and I only wore a 1mm wetsuit. A bit nippy but not too bad. You may find water in June too cold but others may not.

Enjoy. Great place to visit. Gorge in Watkins Glen was my favourite.
