traveling ocean to ocean in two days, where to overnight?

Hello! Due to a traveling quirk, we need to leave Puerto VIejo on the Caribbean one day, then be in Samara the next. That means overnighting somewhere the first night. But where? We don't want to stay in San Jose. Can you recommend a semi-classy hotel/ or inn perhaps in the Alajuela area or west? Say $100/night? And how long will it take us to get to that hotel from Puerto Viejo. We're first time, very excited, experienced travelers in Costa Rica. Thanks!

Maybe you can stay somewhere out of road 27 by Atenas some small B and B around there...then next day back to 27 to Caldera...to Pan Am Hwy...at Limonal take the Bridge road to Nicoya and 45 minutes from Nicoya to SAMARA!

From Puerto Viejo to Atenas...about 5 hours...from Atenas to Samara...about 3.5 hours.

Why not just drive straight through? You have lots of time.

We stayed in the Vista Atenas B&B in March. It's hilltop with a small pool, great views and service. Have to head back down the hill into town for dinner but there are several good restaurants not far away to choose from. Highly recommended.
