How far is Sandy Cay from Staniel Cay? Doable in a whaler? 13 or 17ft, experienced boaters. Thanks all !!!

Not sure of the distance maybe 3-5 miles. No problem in a13 ft whaler as long as conditions are right, otherwise it can get a little wet and bumpy

I thought that Sandy Cay (where "Pirates of the Caribbean" was filmed) was off of Little Exuma...ppas there are two?

If so, it is definately not doable from Staniel. There are excursions form Great Exuma's south side that go there.

Sandy Cay, aka White Cay, is no where near Staniel and cannot be reached in a small outboard boat. It is approximately 86 miles south of Staniel Cay, some of which is open water.

Sandy Cay, which is where the Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed is some 24 miles southeast of Georgetown, Exuma and almost the last Exuma land point before reaching Long island.

As nashpam points out, there may well be two, but I've lived and cruised in the Exumas most of my life and never heard of any other of the same name in the Exuma chain. Nowadays, it seems quite fashionable to rename cays and islands that might sound a bit better than the original names, so it's sometimes hard to keep track of the new/old names.

I CAN HELP! I CAN HELP!!

The OP is most certainly talking about the Sandy Cay near Staniel Cay. It is located a bit under 3 miles NW of Staniel.

Yes, there is another SC on the southeast most part of the Exuma Chain.

My goal someday is to get there totally under my own power (meaning I'm the one solely responsible for every segment of transportation), but that's a longshot as doubt anyone would turn me loose unaccompanied in a boat large enough to do it.

Getting from Staniel Cay to Sandy is fairly easy in a 13' whaler. I've done it many times, but I would advise against doing it with the wind out of the W, NW, or N unless you love getting wet and cold--especially this time of year!

A NE to SE wind is best to do it in.

Here are some pictures I took of Sandy Cay from last June.
