Excursion to Exuma Cays with an 18 month old toddler

We are traveling with our 18 month old. I see many companies listed that take you out on half day or full day trips to the Exuma Cays. Are there any that allow a less than two year old child and is it safe? It is okay if the tour starts and ends at the Great Exuma. Even better if there is a tour that starts and ends at either Nassau or Eleuthera. Appreciate your input. Thanks

The tours are safe. You need to remember that you are on a boat and there's no place to go or convenience features, etc. There are tours that leave Nassau that go to the Land and Sea Park and see sharks, but they don't go to the grotto or pigs.

I would not recommend taking an 18 month old on a trip lasting 8.30am to 5 pm. Its not fair on the child and not fair to the other travellers.

Hi GDaga!

The tours are safe but the ride may not be comfortable on a day trip - read fast bumpy boat for day trip LOL. You're crossing about 40 miles of open water between Nassau and the Exumas, so even if it starts out calm, it may not end up that way. Then think 1 1/2 or 2 hours of bouncing... :(

Where are you staying? You can fly down (Flamingo Air) and spend a few nights at Staniel Cay to see the swimming pigs & iguanas.

Or in Nassau - take a day trip (Flying Cloud, Barefoot Sailing, Sandy Toes) or charter a runabout (contact Sandy Port Resort or Barefoot Sailing Cruises) and go out to nearby (6 miles away) Rose Island for a beautiful 'out island' with 9 miles of coatline dotted by lovely secluded beaches - to rival the Exumas :)

Happy Planning!

No way would I take a toddler on either of these trips.

You both would be miserable on the trip as well as the beach.

There are no facilites set up for toddlers/babies.

And I'm sure you would annoy the heck out of others...

I have to agree with the others. It's a very long day, if the water is choppy the boat ride can be very bumpy. Plus the only bathroom is in the water. Plus it could be too hot for a little one all day, even if the boat has shade it's still warm. We had light rain on our way back from the cays and it felt like shots every where the drops touched us. Ouch, we had to take our towels and cover ourselves from head to toe. It is not something that would be enjoyable for you if your toddler gets cranky only half way into the tour. Maybe rent a boat from. Minns and explore Elizabeth Harbor, then you can be the ones to decide when your toddler has had enough .

Hi all, thanks a lot for all the feedback and suggestions. Based on this discussion, we dropped Exuma from our travel plans. We are going in October and will be doing Eleuthera, Harbour Island, and Nassau. Exuma will have to wait for another time.
