Is it worth it to go to Grand Bahama Island?

We are considering going to Grand Bahama island at the end of March, for a quick getaway. During my research though, it seems like everything in the Bahamas is geared towards Nassua/Paradise Island. So many more hotels, more to do, etc. Is Grand Bahamas actually nice? Since it is such a short trip, we will probably spend most of the time at the beach/hotel, but it would be a definite plus if the island was nice as well. Honest opinions? Also it is a major spring break destination - we will be going Mar 25, but I know spring break is still going on then.

We just came back from GBI in November and really thought it is a nice island. Nassau is the capital and a lot more touristy. Not that Port Lucaya isn't touristy. Westin/Sheraton have a deal right right that if you stay 3 nights you get 3 nights for free. There is plenty of activity in the Port Lucaya area to keep you busy and lots to do around the island. Rent a car for the day, do to UNEXSO and do the dolphin experience. They have great horse riding and there are plenty of restaurants and the beach is lovely. I guess it is all in what you are looking to do. Whatever you choose, have a great time and enjoy the island vibe.

Hey Beachfan88,

I got married last May on Grand Bahama and we had a great time. Great water, good food, and the people were teriffic. Stayed about 30 mi. out in the West End at Old Bahama Bay the first 3 nights, then spent 5 nights at the Sheraton / Our Lucaya. OBBay is a great place to do absolutely nothing. Snorkel, eat (limited restaurants), drink, lay on the beach. Nice pool & marina. Our Lucaya great for activities and numerous restaurants at the Market right across the street, all walking distance. We loved it, although we'd probably opt for the Westin next time. Still have access to all the pools, aminities, etc. in Our Lucaya. Planning on returning for our 5th anniversary. Can't say enough about the market. Live band at Count Basie Square every night, extremely safe, some cruise passengers mixed-in. Great food outside the resort. Walked thru a casino but didn't stay long. Not sure if S.Break destination. If it is, I guarantee they're not down at OBBay. Too far away from the nightlife. Also a plus flying thru Atlanta instead of Miami.

Good luck!

We went down on Jan 25th to book our daughters wedding and found the island to be very expensive. The Westin has a beautiful beach and manicured grounds. Pelican Bay is not on the beach, the rooms were clean and large. Their beach access is by boat to a resort on Ritz beach that is just now, being repaired after the back to back hurricanes 3 years ago.

The Westin/ Sheraton and Pelican Bay are right next to the Marketplace that offers many very good restaurants and bars. Count Bassie square has entertainment and dancing most nights. Be prepared to pay $50 to $75 per person for dinner. Best deal for dinner and friendly people was Shannigan's Irish Pub, dinner for 2 with 2 drinks each was $50.00.

Stop by the Winn Dixie to pick up snacks and beer, but again, be prepared to pay. Not too many deals on anything, on Grand Bahama Island.

We have stayed on GBI twice, once at the Westin and the other at the Ocean Reef, both trips in April. It is beautiful, I love it there. I did not care for Nassau, but my husband liked it there. Too overwhelming for my taste.
