Viva Wyndham vs. Island Seas Resort

We are considering a trip to Freeport in late November or early December of this year. The two places we are considering staying for a week are the Viva Wyndham Fortuna and the Island Seas Resort. As RCI members, we can get either on an exchange.

We would be traveling with 3 children (2, 4, and 12). At the Viva Wyndham we would have all meals inclusive for (I believe) about $900 for the week. At the Island Seas we would do a lot of cooking in the unit and sample the local fare on occasion.

I'm curious if anyone has recommendations between the two places for someone traveling with small children. Both have good and bad reviews aplenty. We don't expect a lot - a clean place and decent amenities, hopefully reasonably friendly staff. Is one better location wise for seeing some of the island? Does one have a substantially better beach than the other?

Finally, we've never to the Bahamas before. Would this be a good time of year to visit? We'll have plenty of snow on the ground here then, so it doesn't need to be hot, but the kids would enjoy being able to get into the pool and wade in the ocean now and then.

Thanks!

November is a very good time to visit - temps should be warm and comfortable but not too hot which is nice. November the water should still be pretty warm, definitely swimmable. Typically November is one of the best months to visit (of course you never know what a year brings).

Beach is very nice at both, both are about 5 minutes from Port Lucaya, neither has more than a few beach bar & grills within walking distance, and both are 3-star resorts. Wyndham is more the resort of the two - with entertainment, disco, all-inclusive, etc. Island Seas is more a condo-timeshare unit like you're probably used to with RCI which means bigger rooms but more do-it-yourself, which is good or bad, depending on your outlook. Both have onsite watersports centers. Biggest difference is whether you want the all-inclusive scene or to do some cooking at your unit (at least for breakfast) and try some local food instead, more independently.

The beach at Wyndham is probably better, but mostly different. It's on a long stretch of white sand beach, while Island Seas is more of a cove. I think both are very nice in their own way.

Since you have three kids on the trip with you I would say Viva Wyndham due to the fact that it is all inclusive. You can totally relax instead of cooking at the other unit. Plus there are many things for the kids to do to keep them well entertained. You can get a van taxi to The Marketplace in town to sample native fare one night which would give you a break from the hotel food. We just came from a short trip there and I would say for a family you cannot beat the value. Very nice staff and nice beach. I had not stayed there until this trip (usually stay at either Grand Lucaya or Flamingo Bay). I would go back to this property. Not a five star hotel but you are not paying for that either. Viva gets my vote.
