Westin at our Lucaya

Hi: We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary the first week of September, at the Westin, and was wondering if we need to rent a car for things to do. Any suggestions on what to do for nightlife? Can we walk to places? Thanks, DM

Congratulations! I personally don't think you need to rent a car or if you do only for a day or two max.

Most of the activities for tourists are around the Lucaya area as the western part of the island was severely damaged by the hurricanes and are not yet rebuilt. At Lucaya you will find the marketplace which has lots of shops, restaurants and bars. A few of our favorite restaurants are: The Pub at Lucaya (ask for Carl) and Zorbas (for fresh grouper). The Count Basie Stage at the Marketplace has entertainment on the weekends (maybe even nightly) and is a great place to dance. Also, check out Billy Joe's Conch Shack on the beach at the Sheraton. Great people and David makes the best conch salad we've ever had!

If you make a left out of the front entrance of the Westin and walk about a block you will find the bus stops where vans will take you to other areas of the island. These are only a couple of dollars per person as opposed to a $16 cab ride. The bus service does not go all the way to the International Bazar. I do understand from other posters that some more of the shops at the Bazar have opened up in the past couple of months so it might be worth it to check it out this trip.

Let us all know what you thought when you get back!

We were at the Westin 7/16-7/20 for our 7th anniversary.

Had a wonderful time. Food at the hotel are very expensive. Try going across the street for meals, very good for the price.

Try the fried lobster tails at Rum Runners for 10 dollars. Coladas are relatively cheap at vending stands.

Theres a casino there, we didn't partake, but heard it was good.

Not much as far as nightlife activities ie. dancing and parties. Sheraton next door has bonfires gathering for guests, small dance club called the prop which was not happenning at all while we were there. The market place across the street has what seemed like nightly entertainment of calypso, fire eating, and limbo demonstrations.

You could probably rent a car for 75-100 dollars/day. Have to drive on the left though. Also try renting a scooter for $50/24hrs. I recommend the Lucayan national park, although small, but has caves, orchids, mangroves and best a clear water stretched deserted beach to get romantic.

Try the Perfect Day Tour if u like snorkeling, staff were professional, and fun. Free bahama mamas, yummy lunch served on deserted island. Volleyball, fishing, banana boatride included.

Westin was the best, try to get the deluxe ocean view room with the square balcony at the end of hotel. View is fantastic. Goodluck and have fun.

I guess I will offer an alternate opinion. We have been to GBI twice now, just recenltly returning last night. We have rented a car both time from Brads. We paid 45 bucks a day. We loved having the car. Driving on the left is a breeze, and after a while I actually started to think there way with turnabouts made sense, nonetheless, we enjoy driving around. We drove out to Ruby Swiss to eat, over to paradise cove, and out to pier one to see teh destruction and over to club caribe for a great lunch. Plus I think you get a much better feel for the island if you can drive around. As for nightlife, fish fry, bon fire, and nightly fun at count basie square.
