The Ritz Beach Resort - Hurricane Damage?

I'm scheduled to stay at the Ritz Beach Resort in October 2005. I just received a letter from RCI saying that as a result of last year's hurricanes some of the resort's facilities are under repair and may not be available during my stay. Additionally, attractions and businesses around the island may be in various states of repair.

Can someone who has been there recently let me know how things are and what I can expect? Thanks a lot.

We were there in october 2004. the resort was totally shut down. They were working on it.That end of the island got pretty hurt. They have a big pretty pool if it will be open. The beach is nice there but you can't see it from your rooms. the rooms at the ritz are kind of weird. very modern and all the furniture is built in at odd angles.

We have been to the Island seas resorts 3 times with RCI. I would reccomend they switch you. it is nice. Take fitted queen sheets with you. The only have flat and they don't stay on. If port Lucaya resorts are open you can go sit at their wonderful pools. the whle resort was closed when we were there. Don't go to Ocean Reef resort. Pools are above ground. Water is chilly in October take a shorty.Hope this helps.

Just came back last night. I stayed at Our Lucaya, and pretty much everything one needs were open while I was there.

When I was going across the street to Port Lucaya Marketplace a saleslady was soliciting my visiting the Ritz Beach Resort to check it out; as she put it "if I like it I could go there next visit". Therefore, I can only assume that the Ritz is now up and running and ready for visitors. I would imagine you would not have much problems. If anything, go over to Lucaya, everything is open. I did not go to downtown Freeport, but not all things are up and running yet according to the taxi drivers.

I returned on April 26th from a 10 day stay at the Ritz Beach Resort. The resort suffered damage to two of the older buildings. They will be either repairing them, or leveling/rebuilding, depending on the final evaluations. The other buildings on the property, The Ritz and the Coral Suites are up and running. The pool, which iresembles a waterpark is fabulous. It has a lazy river with a water slide, in operation with an attendant, from 1 to 4 daily. They also provide water tubes at cost cost. Feel free to bring your own vinyl lounge. One area of the pool has aprox. eight inches of water just enough for the kiddies. Steps away is the beach. They have a water ports hut where you can make arrangements for just about anything you want. They have a resturant on site that has good food, or you can go to Port Lucaya. The resort provides a number of grocery store runs for no charge. I would recommend bring some basic things from home. For instance, I packed diet coke. My husband cannot go a day without it. We did not see diet coke anywhere. Regualr coke, yes. Diet pepsi, yes. I also packed cereal and snacks and bought milk and such at the market over there.

The resort sells water taxi passes at the front desk to get you Port Lucaya which is also up and running. It is a daily charge of 5 p/p round trip for RCI guests, and 2.50 p/p if you are an owner. Last year the water taxi was 25 dollars p/p for the week. We were told that they are not sure if they will return with the one week pass. Still, the cheapest way to get to Port Lucaya. There is nightly entertainment in Count Basie Square - for those who like to drink and pary. Across the street from Port Lucaya Marketplace is Our Lucaya and the Westin resorts. The Isle of Capri casino is also open.

We took a bus to the International Bazzar and that part of town is in the process of repair. The only section open was the straw market and there was barely a soul there. Very sad to see. The Crown Plaza was closed as well as their casino. I would think by the time you get there they should be up and running. All in all, we had a great vacation and we would not hesitate to go again. Hopefully they won't see another hurricane for years to come, but the Island people and their homes will be better prepared.
