Has anyone taken Discovery Cruise to Grand Bahama?

I hate to fly and thought we might use Discovery cruise to get to Grand Bahama. Wanted to know if it was nice. How is the food, service, rooms etc.? We've done the Disney cruise so we may be spoiled. Any comments would be nice. Thanks!

I've taken it twice (hate to fly too). Last month I went again and decided to fly. It's only 30 mins from Ft. Lauderdale, so I took a valium and dealt with it, although the flight was fine.

Anyway, if you've done Disney, you might not be too impressed with Discovery. Discovery was my first so called cruise so I didn't think it was too bad. The 5 hours to get there made me impatient and it was kind of tiring. We did get a cabin both times though and that helped a lot. We just took a nap when we got bored. The service is great.

The food: Breakfast is very good. Eggs, fruit, waffles, etc.

Skip the lunch if you can or at least just eat the sandwiches or rolls. Both times the hot lunch food made me sick for a few days.

The dinner on the way back: Upgrade to the 7 course meal for $20. It's really very, very good!!! Some of my friends/family that went with us the first time had the regular hot buffet and got sick from the fish. I'm not saying it's going to happen every time though.

The fun part is having a mimosa when you get there, there's a casino and some games and shows inside. It gets old after 2 hours (especially spending all the extra money) and that's when your cabin comes in so handy.

Hope this helps!

I'm gonna agree about 100% with the last post. My friend and I took the Discovery over a few weeks ago because we got such a great deal. The price for the cruise and two nights at the Sheraton was the same price as air fare for one person. It was not what I expected however but being my first cruise, tolerable.

The food was disgusting in mybook. Breakfast was and I didn't try lunch or dinner. I am very picky about what I eat thought and that could be the problem. The trip over is very tiring as you have to be at the cruise dock at 5:45 am and all I wanted to do was sleep on the ship. IF you do get a cabin which you should, do not get the cheapest one for $25. Get the next upgrade. OUrs had no windows and I couldn't even stay in the room. On the return trip we got th e$45 cabin and it had two small beds (instead of one before) and a small window. Much more tolerable. The ride home was more fun because it was 5 pm and everyone was still partying from their trip in the Bahamas. That lasted about 2 hours and that was that..we slept the remainder!

I guess its what you make of it. Its more a means of transportation than anything. Cheap though! Hope this helps.

We have taken Discovery twice and HATED it. Like a previous reviewer stated, it is only a 30 minute flight. You will be so, so glad you flew. There are so many people on the ship throwing up from being seasick, even if you don't get seasick yourself. The cruise was LONG and boring. If you've done the Disney bit you will be VERY, VERY disappointed for sure. I love to fly, so I may be a bit biased, but I would much rather be on a plane for 1/2 hour than on a boat for 6-7. That seems such a waste of vacation time to me that could be spent on the beach. But, good luck whatever you choose!

we have flown there and we have also taken discoveryCruises

we have taken that ship 3 times versus 1 flight over. granted the ship is old, there is nothing fancy on it. there is not a lot of rooms available. so everyone can't get a room if they wanted one, there are plenty of places to hang out on the ship. i found that you don't need a room on they way over to GBI but it comes in very handy on the way back. we don't mind flying but we just like to think of the Discovery Sun ship as part of our vacation and enjoy ourselves. we also like to cruise too.(although this ship is nowhere near to the standards of a full size cruise ship and they don't claim to be)

We took the Discovery cruise 8/04. The ship is a dump. The cabins are dirty, the carpet and furniture are old and worn, and the whole room smells like mildew. The staff is very unfriendly, the waiters at the restaurant are slow and the food is just ok. The lines in customs are horribly long and the baggage handlers throw your luggage onto the ground and its a mad dash to try to find it. DO NOT take this cruise if you dont have to.

My son and I took the Discovery and got back last Monday night. (Last year we took the CAT-it only took two hours but is not in service right now.) We took the Discovery because of the deal that we got at Skyauction.com: the cruise and two nights at the Sheraton for $142 each and we bought additional nights for $45 each. For that price it is hard to go wrong. Service was very good, food was average; there just seemed to be a whole lot of "hurry up and waiting" during the last hour of both legs of the trip. If you keep in mind the destination is the highlight, and that the cruise is simply a way to get there, then the cruise is "okay."

Bon voyage.
