Hoping for clarification on a few things

Our trip is based around a conference held at Atlantis in early December. This is a big deal trip, plus I generally don't like to be surprised by anything regarding vacations. Which means the planning really does have to start now so we're ready to book when the time is correct. Which I'm thinking will be mid to late August.

Delta has first/business seats right now for $970 RT. PDX > ATL > NAS. $920 is a bargain as economy is $670. These tickets can only go up, correct? I've read so much about waiting to buy international airfare until just about three months ahead of the trip. But this price is AMAZING as far as I can tell.

Harborside Villas: Is it really Fri-Fri booking only? familyfunatlantis.com appeared to be this way. We are going to be on the island from 4 December until the 12th and I think I would prefer Harborside. Atlantis doesn't seem great overall, except for The Reef because they have a kitchenette, the same as Comfort Suites. Breakfast at a restaurant is generally a waste as we eat small meals in the mornings.

Atlantis restaurant reservations: Should we really make them months in advance? Murray's, Carmine's, Atlas, etc.

How busy is the resort in early December? We're just curious.

Is the kitchenette in The Reef suite adequate? We're hoping to prepare scrambled eggs, toast, basic breakfast food. Is the supplied mini-fridge empty upon arrival? I had read one post that it was not and any moving of the contents would result in a charge. Maybe I was confused by the post. As a result, the traveler didn't have enough room to chill water, soda, etc. I'm okay bringing a soft side cooler and keeping it stocked with ice for eight days. Mostly... ;)

Beaches: Are there umbrellas and lounges available for rent? Do I need to get down there early in the day to hold them during a December visit?

Cigarette smoking: I'm asthmatic and any smoke effects me, so I need to avoid that as much as possible. Will I be able to avoid the smoke most of the time at the pools and beach? What about restaurants?

Is there a way to check if any cruise ships will be stopping while we're there, or is it something to just expect?

Thanks in advance if you can answer any of these questions.

I'll take a shot at some of that. Early December is a good time to travel. Crowds will be down and the weather should be warm enough. You might want to bring a light jacket as it could be cool at night. There will always be cruise ships, number of ships and size vary from day to day. If you stay at the reef you will be somewhat insulated from the cruise ship crowds

We usuallly make our restaurant reservations online 30-45 days before arrival. We have never had a problem getting times we wanted this far in advance.

Flight prices on delta move up and down for travel from atlanta to nassau.I would assume the same is true from pdx-nas. If you see a good deal, book it.

Early december is off peak so I don't think you will have much problems with chairs. The chairs and umbrellas are free to atlantis guests. There are no umbrellas on the beach but some of the chairs have covers.

The biggest problem for people allergic to smoke will be the casino where smoking is allowed and smoke is plentiful. I believe the restaurants are all smoke free and I have never noticed a smoke problem at the pool or beach.

Hope this helps.

December will not be busy at all--unless there is a huge convention there. I own there and My brother owns the week above and whenever I go it is now crowded.

As to Harborside all the units that are rented by owners are weekly rentals--check in days are either Friday/Saturday or Sunday--if all family fun has is a Friday arrival it is because that is all they have listed with them at this time. I would e mail Noreen there to see if there is a possibility of changing any reservations-as an owner there I know that occupancy at that time isn't that high.

As to cruise ships--even if they are there this time of year should not be an issue. Cruise ships are only a problem during high occupancy periods at the main hotels.

Rooms are smoke free and honestly smoke bothers me also so doubt you will have an issue==can't really even remember people smoking at the pools.

No umbrellas but if you want chairs pool side with an umbrella the Mayan pool is your best location. There are some older chairs with shade cover on the beach but as they are removed due to condition it is my understanding that they won't be replacing with the same kind.

As to restaurants your issue that time of year is if occupancy is low many will be closed. I would make reservations in advance for Carmine's but check when you get there that it is open the day of your reservation. Buffets are always open.

If you have any other questions ask away!
