Atlantis Resort chooses course that will kill dolphin, Vets...

In our paper this morning is an article about 4 dolphins that had survived the Hurricane in Biloxi (you may have seen them on TV), they were being kept in an aquarium in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. The aquarium in Biloxi was devastated and will not be reopening anytime soon so the owner sold the dolphins to the Atlantis Resort.

Problem is that since the hurricane, one of the dolphins had developed a disease that in most cases is deadly. She was however on the road to recovery until last night. The Atlantis Casino decided that they needed the dolphins for promotional purposes so decided to take the three healthy ones and leave the sick one. The trainersand vets say that without her pod the sick dolphin will most certainly die.

I find this to have been a disgusting greedy decision. I can hardly see how the guest of the Atlantis would have noticed if these these dolphins didn't show up for another month.

I am a full-hearted dolphin lover. I've studied them, played with them, swam with them. I have a dolphin tatoo. I truely love dolphins.

That said, although this is a disturbing story, I can understand. A lot of times, these type of diseases can be contagious, or spreadable. With that in mind, it makes sense that they would not want the sick dolphin with the other 3, not to mention however many others it would be in contact with, at the Atlantis. By "sacrificing" one sick dolphin, they may be in the long run saving the lives of many other marine animals.

Please, don't get me wrong, I am not condoning this AT ALL. But, I do understand their thinking.

All 4 dolphin had been together throughout the hurricane and the disease. They were the ones that were found in the gulf after Katrina. Not sure what the disease is but I am assuming that since they have been left together that it is not contageous. The vets said she was on the mend and would be healthy within a month.

The vets said they should have been left together the business folks came and got 3 and left one.

I thinking the vets had the best interest of the dolphins in mind over the businesses folks.
