RIU Paradise Island

We're to RIU next month and I had a few questions. First off, has anyone stayed there? I know it only opened in Dec. but there aren't any reviews at all. Secondly do you know if you can use the water park at Atlantis if you're not staying there? Does it cost extra and if so how much?

Many thanks!

Just returned from 4 nights at the RIU and had a GREAT time! We had been worried after reading the initial reviews but clearly any of the major teething problems have been worked out. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly, accommodating and anxious to ensure we had a good stay.

We have also realized that any of the problems we did encounter were Sunquest's issues and not the RIU's.

The food was great and at the buffet there was always a selection of dishes. Some of the staples appeared every day as someone else had commented on, but there were always new additions.

There was some construction going on but since we didn't notice it until our third day, it certainly wasn't obvious or in the way.

The rooms are clean, have great views of the ocean and our bar fridge was stocked every other day as promised.

Our overall impression is that the RIU is a great hotel that is continuing to work at improving the facilitiy and their services.

Would we go back? Yes, but we would likely wait a few extra weeks for the weather to warm up a bit and for the winds to die down.

It seems like people who have been to RIU more recently have reported less problems. I'm trying to decide between spending $230 a night at the Radisson (including fees) or $368 a night at RIU, which is obviously all-inclusive. We are a young (mid-20s) couple, and we're on a bit of a budget -- but I figure meals and drinks each day could very well end up costing more than the difference between the RIU and the Radisson.

We're not looking for fancy shmancy -- we just want a nice beach with good water to swim in, a nice pool, and maybe a chance to do a little snorkeling somewhere. Thoughts on what my best option is?

Just got back from the Riu and had a fabulous time! The food and drinks were great...even had lobster (with shrimp & mussels) at the buffet. The mini bar & liquor dispenser in your room is no extra charge which is replenished every other day. The entertainment/band were wonderful and the club in the resort was filled with happy participating people. Our view was spectacular of the beautiful ocean and pool. The staff were the most pleasant and accomadating people I have ever met on an island. Cannot say the same about the Atlantis staff who were very self centered & rude (this is while they thought we were guest there even). **At the Riu, the jacuzzi located in the spa is free along with the sauna and is worth a visit at least once in your time there.** The pool was warm enough to swim in and the days were sunny and pleasant...evenings a bit cooler but nice. Went snorkeling for a half day, compliments of the hotel since the out building wasn't completed to accomadate the watersports that normally would be included. The hotel offered a free half day snorkeling trip or free massage treatment at their spa...snorkeling was wonderful! Went to the Atlantis and went through the "Digs" aquarium indoors which were in cave settings and also checked out the outdoor part...it was free for us, but, heard some people were charged. The Atlantis resembles a shopping mall inside which might be an attraction for people who like Versace, Cartier, Hermes stores...mostly a CASH COW inside and outside of the place. Heard some people were being approached to take tours of the timeshares/condos but, we manage to steer clear of these salespeople. Never was asked to leave either but, some people were. Unless you don't mind kids running loose (at all hours of the night) and spending money for everything you do (restaurants & bars are extremely expensive there), I wouldn't recommend staying at the Atlantis. Nobody at the Riu that we talked to won money in the casino...neither did we witness anyone winning while we were visiting the casino.

I would go back to the Riu again if I ever visit Bahamas again. I like to visit different islands in the Caribbean and this makes the 10th island I have been to. I prefer all inclusives but, have been to a few that weren't and had positive experiences too.

Again, check out the hottub/jacuzzi in the spa...no cost just rejuvenate your mojo and relax!! No problem mon!
