Visiting Bahamas W/O Atlantis

Looking for family vacation this coming July. Family of 5 (including 3 teens). While we would love to stay at Atlantis, the cost is prohibitive for our size (other than the Harborside units which seem to get pretty uneven ratings). Budget probably $500 per night.

Question: would you recommend staying in and around Paradise Island or looking to one of the outer islands? Looking first and foremost for beach/ocean views .... swimming, snorkeling, etc. Is safety a consideration if not staying at one of the mega resorts?

I think you'd get more bang for your buck accommodations-wise if you stayed at a house on an Out Island. But you have to factor in another flight. Or if you can get to ATL, Delta flies to Georgetown, Great Exuma every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

I wouldn't completely rule out harborside.

Go to www.familyfunatlantis.com or wwwredweek.com and check out the weekly rates. People not using their week have a company rent their week out to another party. The cost is much better than renting directly thru Atlantis.

For a wonderful family vacation, visit the Family Islands. There is a promotion - check myoutislands.com/two-fly-free-bahamian-resid…

I personally can recommend two family resorts on Cat Island. Pigeon Cay or Fernandez Bay. Adults, kids, teenagers, they will love it. Pretty sure it should come within your budget. Both resorts offer the flexibility of cooking some of your own meals or dining on site or at some of the local restaurants.

I just spent the night in Coral Harbor at the Coral Harbor Beach House and Villas. They are on the south side of New Providence, right on the beach. Sandbar and Restaurant. Felt like we were already back to Long Island, definately an out island feel in a safe area, but with cab or bus availability to visit the other areas. Very reasonable rates (for Nassau) the 2 bedroom beach house was about $400/night and our cute one bedroom had a kitchen, too. Cleaner than many of the hotels we have stayed in at a similar rate.

It might be an option to get the feel of the out islands as well as being able to take in the sights of Nassau.
