The beach in front of the RIU is known as Cabbage Beach. It's a public beach, and does get a bit crowded on busy cruise ship days. You can walk a couple of miles (approx.) along the beach heading east.

Just to the right, looking at the sea, or east of the Riu beach, there are trees at the top of the beach that provide som shade. This area is usually pretty crowded as it is next to the public access path to the beach. If you continue on walking east, the shading trees become less dense to non existent but you will usually have the beach to yourselves at many spots.

Directly in front of the Riu, the building does provide some shade in the afternoon as the beach faces north.

you may also want to note, it also depends on what time of year you visit, around dec-jan-february, the beach in front of riu to surnrise beach villas mostly shaded, however, by summer months it is pretty much full sun.
