Norwegian Sky

My family and I are planning a cruise for July 2009. We have been on Royal Caribbean and Carnival in the past. We enjoyed both. We have always gone to the Caribbean in the past except for one year we went down the Pacific. We didn't like the weather at all on the Pacific side. It wasn't a very good trip.

We are thinking of doing a 4 day trip to the Bahamas. My wife and I are in our mid 40s and we have 19 and 16 year old sons. The biggest problem comes with the 19 year old. On most ships the teenage activities only go up to 17 and the drinking age is 21. So it seems like there is nothing for the 18-20 year old group. I know drinking isn't the only way to have fun but try to tell that to a college student. By the way, he is a responsible drinker from what I can tell. I just think it might be a good way for him to meet young adults in his age group.

We are looking at the Norwegian Sky since 18 and up can drink beer and wine with a parent authorization. I would like to hear suggestions from people in a similar situation that have children in the same age groups, especially if you have been on the Norwegian Sky. I know this is the first summer for this ship in the Bahamas but I was wondering if anyone else with teenagers and young adults are planning this trip for the summer. The more kids in their age group, the more fun they will have. The more fun they have, the more fun mom and I have.

My husband and I took our daughters on a cruise - they were 19 and 20, both in college. We felt exactly like you..while drinking is not the sole purpose of the cruise, kids this age don't like to be told they "can't" do something because they are too young, especially when, as you pointed out, there is nothing offered for this "in-between" age group. They did like the fact that on NCL they could drink beer and wine without breaking the rules and risking ejection. We took our cruise during Spring Break 2008 so there were more kids their age than not. Our cruise was a 5 day trip on the Jewel and stopped in Cozumel. We shopped and then did the Spring Break thing at Senior Frogs and ALL had a GREAT time. My mother - 60 - was with us and she had a blast as well. Cruising seems to be fun for the young and not-so-young alike. We have been on the Pearl and the Jewel and they are both wonderful ships. Unfortunately, I am also looking for info on the Sky's Bahama trip - which is how I found your question - so I can't comment specifically on that. If having kids their age around is a concern, I strongly recommend a Spring Break cruise. The cruise itself was not overly rowdy...it was a party atmosphere and everyone just wanted to have a fun time. If anyone can tell me whether the 3 day weekend trip is a good value and if the ship is in good condition, I would be interested in that info. Thanks.

I think the Sky would be a perfect ship for you and family at that age. It really was a party atmosphere with out going completely insane. Dazzles nite club can go pretty late but it's a really safe atmosphere. Lots of choices for food and the service is exemplary without being in your face too much. The fitness room and sauna and steam area are free and wonderful to use. Ship is really clean... would suggest two rooms if you're going inside state. They are small but very comfortable and clean. Casino is nice without being huge (didn't use). One word of caution - drinks are expensive.

I just got back from the Sky cruise on Friday. The Spring Break crowd was a bit more than I thought it would be. Saw lots of skin and drunk stupid kids, but it was interesting and fun. I went with my 20 year old son and a 19 year old and his dad. The boys had a blast. I hate to sound sexist, but I was glad my 18 year old daughter couldn't go. And yes, the drinks are really expensive (about $6 a beer, $8 a mixed drink), we had a $500 tab when we left the ship and we didn't drink that much.

You can bring a bottle of wine on board, but they charge you for it ($12 I believe)...and they scan all the bags and confiscate any hidden liquor in them when you check in.

The college kids fill their mouthwash and shampoo bottles with booze to try to get around it, but I doubt you'd want to do that with a vintage Pinot Grigio.

I just got back from a 3 day Bahamas cruise on NCL Sky. We had a great Girls Weekend,,but I will NEVER go on NCL again. I'm in the process of writing a nice letter to NCL. I'll wait until I hear from them before I post all the details.

We just got off the 3/23 to 3/27 sailing and had a nice time. Some people feel NCL is out for money, but so are the other lines. We had a big problem and took alot to get taken care of regarding shore excursions we booked before the cruise, but returned to the shorex desk embark day before 8. This was stated on the bottom of the ticket. Well next day I found out that they charged the 2 excursions and the Cruise Reward that we were going to use and booked in place of the shore excursions. Was basically treated like a liar from the word go.. Finally got sorted out with a call to the Hotel Director.

I'm not going to not sail on the Sky again because of one or two crewmembers and have to say that the Sky is very much like our other favorite NCL ship the Sun. It is the sister ship to the Sun. It was laid out well and aside from the snafu with the crew and 1,500 screaming drunk college students it was a great cruise.

We took an independent taxi tour for 2 hours around the island and to Atlantis.

The biggest caveat I would have and say to you is that watch them like a hawk. They love to sell DRINKS DRINKS DRINKS and Photos Photos. We managed to leave with a 112.00 bill which is astounding for us. So you can have a great time on this ship and still keep the budget happy. As to the 18 and 19 year olds that would be something you would have to decide but I know they can drink with an authorization from a parent on the same cruise.

Another cheap way is to pack Sodas and Bottled Water but be wary you may get called to the naughty room to inspect the water and sodas. I don't like it and I always get nabbed with my case of water like on the Dawn, Sun, Majesty and other ships. I now just take it on with me in a carry on suitcase.

But the SKY is a great ship and you will have a great time.
