Tips for first time bahamas traveler?

hi, my girlfriend and i will be visiting the bahamas in a few weeks. We will be staying at the Hilton for about 4 days and 3 nights, weekdays only (mon-thur). could you "seasoned" bahama travelers give us any advice on what is a "must see"? also, anything tips for things NOT to do, things to look out for? we will definately go on the powerboat trip and do some gambling, but other than that we are at a loss. any recomendations on good places to eat would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for the help!!!

You will have a wonderful time in the Bahamas and you will be so glad that you went. Some good places to eat (not expensive) are the Poop Deck, and Cafe Johnny Canoes. You can read some feedback on these and others on this site. In the search area typ in the name or just food. I like these 2 because of the prices, food and the staff. Since your already taking the Powerboat tour (Good Choice!), if you want more water sports try Stuarts Cove. They have some great choices. The Majestic Dinner Cruise is great too. Dinner on a boat while the sun is setting. I think your girlfriend would love it! Go into town for all of the shops and the famous " Straw Market" My advice to you would be to ask the locals anything about the area and places to see and things to do. They are a wealth of information and want to share it with you. When in the Straw Market, every vendor will stop you and try to sell you their wares. Be respectful and say you want to look around first. Never pay what they are asking! You can always get it cheaper, but don't go too low as you will insult them. Check out the woodcarvers just outside of the Straw Market. These guys are amazing. I hope you have a safe and happy trip. Let us know when you get back what you thought!

You could try Montagu Gardens for dinner one night. The food and service is excellent. I've also heard that Conch Fritters restaurant is good. We're going in June & plan to give it a try. As far as activities go, you may want to take the ferry boat over to Paradise Island and check out Atlantis. Stop by the Green Parrot for a coktail. Have a great time!

Definitely talk to the staff at your hotel like the other post mentioned. They are very helpful and will steer you in the right direction.

Also, do some research before you go. We didn't the last time and we missed out on a lot. Frommers and Frodors both have books out: Bahamas 2005. I just saw them at the library yesterday or you can go on their websites. They both have reviews and tips on restaurants, hotels, attractions, and all the islands of the Bahamas.

I'm not the type that likes to visit the same place over and over again, but there is so much to do, and so many islands to see that I just can't get enough of the Bahamas. I hope you all have a ball!!

I am not a "seasoned" bahama traveler, but I have been. Unfortantely, I can't offer you advice on what to do, but I would like to warn you of one thing not to do. I had a bad experience with renting a jet ski in Nassau. The men on the beach swarmed us fighting for our business. We picked a guy and paid his price for the 1 hour. 30 minutes later he told us to come in. We told him we had 30 minutes left and resisted coming in, so he decided to ram our jet ski with his. Luckily he wasn't going fast, but he certainly was trying to scare us. We went on in like whipped little puppies and went back to our ship and stayed there! There was another couple there with us and they were as shocked as we were about the whole thing.

Carnival warned all its passengers not to get off the ship at night for safety reasons.

csimco,

Sorry this happened to you. Jet Skis are unregulated and these guys sometimes have no patience.

As for Carnivals warning - they have an agenda. They want you to spend you money on thier ship. Carnival, as well as a few other companies insist that the bahamian government and store owners pay for advertising their establishments otherwise they would use the warnings. There were no takers. NO kickbacks, so hence the warning.

The area around the port and in the tourist area are very safe after dark. You will see from your ship, hundreds of people strolling the wharf and partying at Senor Frogs, British Colonial and off to Atlantis and the casinos.

I wouldn't recommend you walking where there is no lighting/people/ security (government buildings etc), but the immediate area is perfectly safe.
