Renting from owners in St. John?

We are thinking of going to St. John in March, maybe April of 07. We have been to Maui for 5 years in a row and the flight from WI is just a killer! Although everyone has told us there is no place like Hawaii.. we'd like to try somewhere else. Eveyone seems to like St. John the best of all the USVI. We like Maui over the other Hawaiian Islands because it is still quiet, but you can go into Lahaina at night for a few bars, a little music and some local shopping. We usually asks the locals where to eat and have found some great out of the way places! Also, like that people don't hassle you to buy stuff like Jamacia, and that you can drink the water! My husband is an avid snorkeler so great snorkeling is a must! We have rented from a private owner in Mauii and it has worked out great! We would be traveling with 4 adults, 2 of whom are police officers. Having a family member who rents her luxury condo in Maryland, I understand and have had to fix what can happen from unscrupulous renters! No worries here! Does anyone have any suggestions of where to stay or somewhere they have stayed that is nice. Looking around $2500 a week tops. Thanks for the help!

using an island based agent is quite common on st. john/ great to have some one available if you have any needs/repairs etc. - considering the price you're looking for i'd suggest that you plan your trip for after 4/15 when rates go down..otherwise you might find it difficult to rent one for the amount you need !! after that date , no problem !!! good luck !!

We are using www.privatehomesvi.com for our upcoming trip next month. The ladies there are very helpful and will answer any questions you have about the island and each home they represent. Sago Palms is where we are staying and I haven't heard anything but great reviews about it. It stays booked though. Check it out.

We're just back from Kauai, which we love. We also love St John and have gone there numerous times in the last 20 years. We'd go to Kauai more often, but the trip from Massachusetts is also a killer.

We have been to Maui, prefer Kauai, but it does sound that St John has much of what you enjoy on Maui. St John is smaller. St John has some great hiking trails. The snorkeling will be as good (probably better) and, like on Maui, has plenty of great snorkeling right off the beach. Cruz Bay is smaller and less sophisticated than Lahaina, but has bars and a range of restaurants. Some live music. People usually head to St Thomas to quell their shopping urges, but there are interesting shops on STJ. People don't hassle you (if there are any complaints, it's being ignored). We don't drink the water there, but then we don't drink the water here in Massachusetts either.

As a previous poster suggests, keeping it under $2500 for 4 people (it matters if that means 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms) will be a bit of a challenge, but not impossible. Many rates drop in mid-April and more places would become possibilities for you.

As also mentioned above, I'd prefer to be renting through an agency on the island than directly from an owner somewhere on the mainland, just in case....

We stay on the Coral Bay side of the island (less developed than the Cruz Bay side) and have been very satisfied renting through Windspree (http://www.windspree.com/).
