Need advice on best location to rent a villa....

My husband and I are thinking about going to St. John (we found great airfare), but we have never been there before. Where is the best location (view & proximity to a calm beach), and can anyone recommend a villa (w/a pool) for 2?

Hi Gaby,

You need to do a little research about the island and decide what your personal preferences are. The western side of STJ has the main town of Cruz Bay with it's shops and restaurants and sunset views. Coral Bay on the eastern side with sunrise views is much quieter and laid back . The best views are always higher up on the hillsides. Regardless of where you stay you can find a beach nearby. The north shore beachs can be rough in the winter months, but you can find nice calm ones on the south shores. There are so many beaches there you'll want to visit more than just one.

What is your budget for a villa rental for a week? They vary widely.

Don't get hung up on being close to the water - you won't find many villas that are. Unlike a lot of other destinations, it is REALLY EASY to drive around, park, hop out of the car and hit the beach. You will likely spend more time doing that than hanging out on whatever beach is close to your villa. Besides, it's a great way to see the rest of the island - something you'd not want to miss by staying "close to home" the whole time.

While you're doing your research, you'll find that there aren't that many 1 bedroom villas. Don't be afraid to look into 2 or 3 bedroom options as they often have reduced rates when there are only 2 people staying in the house (the other bedrooms are simply closed off so you can't use them, and they don't have to be cleaned after your stay).

Definitely build a rental car into your budget. Yes, you should get 4WD. Hard-top is better than soft-top for the security of your stuff when you're away from the car.

Your first decision should be which side of the island you want to stay on. After that I'm sure people can help you narrow your choices some.

Enjoy!!

We found a nice looking 1-bedroom villa for less than $1000/week. We are going this week and we can give you more of an idea of what it is like if you are interested. It is in Cruz Bay within walking distance of downtown with a small pool. We found quite a few 1 bedrooms around the same price range, availability is the main issue.

if you want to be close to a beach check out this site--www.stjohnusvi.org -- the "villa" is Honeymoon Cottage and it's adorable/well maintained/private and it's a short walk to one beautiful beach..Francis Bay, which is calm water. this cottage has a hot tub, no pool but the place is great. something to consider. the drive into cruz bay brings you by the north shore beaches, very scenic !! this cottage is owned by a woman who lives on island and is very helpfull with info and tips regarding st. john.she'll be a wonderfull host. if you def want a pool here are some other options: Cliffside Terrace(chocolate hole), Hawksbill(great cruz bay), Over the Rainbow(reef bay),Orchid Knoll(bordeaux mnt)..imo, Orchid has the best view !! i've stayed in all of these and enjoyed them all. check site www.caribbeanvilla.com good luck !!
