Look at the itineraries, for snorkeling Norman Caves and Indians are considered prime. They also offer other itineraries to the Baths and Jost which are less snorkeling. Stormy Petrel/Pirates Penny is highly rated by people who have tried both that and the New Horizon's, for example, because the NH is more crowded.

How long does it take to get from St Thomas to British VI by ferry?

The ferry from Tortola to Red Hook makes a stop in Cruz Bay, St John to clear customs so add a buffer of 30 - 60 minutes for that. Ferry to CA clears customs in CA.

So if you leave St Thomas for BVI, there is a stop on St John's. This means about two hours to get to BVI?

No, it does not take 2 hours to get to the BVI.

If you go from STT to the BVI, you clear customs in the BVI when you get there. On the way back, if you choose a ferry that goes to Red Hook, you need to stop in STJ to clear customs because Red Hook in STT has no facilities to clear C&I. If you take a ferry back to Charlotte Amalie (CA) you clear C&I when you arrive in CA and there is no stop in STJ.

So, if you choose to return via Red Hook instead of CA then you need to leave time to clear in STJ.

Definitely go with Stormy Petrel & Pirates Penny (http://www.piratespenny.com/) and opt for their trip on either Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday as you get to do more snorkeling on the those days. We just returned from St. Thomas and did a trip to BVI and had a great time. Try to get Captain Galen as he is very entertaining. There is a video on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHNYi4G3k6c) which shows part of the trip your would take. This is not my video.

I also did a day sail on High Pockets (http://sailhighpockets.com/) which was fantastic. With High Pockets we got to do more snorkeling but you don't go to BVI, you sail around St. Thomas and St. John.

Hope you have a great trip!
