First of all thank you to all the people that post on this forum. You were very helpful. I have read all the post regarding the debate of renting a car or not. We chose not to rent a car and relied on Safari and taxi cabs.
If we would have rented a car for 8 days, figuring in gas and parking fees, we had a budget for $500.00. The bad thing is, I would have had to drive, which means no drinking beer during the day with my toes in the sand. So I'm responsible and don't drink. We go out for super and have some other drunk back into my rental car. (Which happened twice to a couple we met).
We stayed at sapphire beach resort and my total cost for 8 days of using safari buses and cabs was $262.00. That included transfers: to and from airport, a day in charlotte, two trips to the grocery store, to and from red hook 8 times, taxi's on St. John's, and to and from lindquist beach. We did not see the whole island, but for $200.00 more we could have.
If you don't plan on drinking a lot and want the freedom to come and go as you please, rent a car. If you like to cocktail during the day, forget the car and let the locals drive you around.
Also we spent a day going to the bvis with St. John boat rentals. They pick you up right at sapphire marina. They are great and I highly recommend them. Safe travels.
