So many "bad" car rental co.s! Which is "least bad"?

Guess my question is more of a poll in a way.

There are so many horrible reviews and posts about the various car rental companies on STT. (The one w/the best reviews is just too expensive for us!) Of the rest, one of the "better" companies by some accounts supposedly uses 2007 cars (not so bad in itself, but I've seen a few posts saying the cars are often dirty and in poor physical condition - ?). Lots of bad reviews about the Thrifty/Dollar companies, and even Hertz. So, here we are trying to decide - should we go w/Thrifty or Dollar ("sister companies") and probably get so-so to poor service but a newish compact car, or go with the 2007 cars of another co.? There must be a few forum readers who have rented and have not posted their experiences. I am hoping some who have rented recently will "vote" - and add a few comments, please!

Thanks for any input.

No doubt time of year has something to do w/it, too. I don't suppose it would help to fib a bit with regard to our time of arrival as far as the car being more likely to be ready???

For those of you who rented through Dependable Car Rental, how were they as far as getting to the airport in a timely manner to pick you up, getting your paperwork filled out quickly, and the reverse when you were ready to go home?

I think that it's day of the week that is most important, although time of year and time of day I am sure are also influential.

Steve makes an important point. Im sure weekday arrivals are less hectic. For me, I always come Friday or Saturday and Im told it will be 45 minutes and Im on the road roughly an hour later everytime. Not acceptable for me anymore so Ill stick with the local guys from now on.

I travel a lot and have rented cars dozens and dozens of times but no where is the service as bad as the USVI. They simply don't care and they know you don't have much other choice.

You would think the companies using the major car rental names would be better but there not. Simply a locally owned company just paying to use there name. Every company has both positive and negative reviews, it's a true crap shoot when renting.

We started using AVIS 5 or 6 years ago, and have "never" had any issues. Counter wait is relatively short, counter people are reasonably helpful, car is always available, and cars are always low miles and nearly new. (I actually wish they had a few scratches and dings so I didn't have to be so dang careful!) Always leave a little sand in the car, but have never been charged for cleaning. I'm a "Preferred" member and have a "Wizard" number. Don't know if that helps.

A few years ago they actually had a check-in agent in the parking lot with a hand-held, just like the big airports, but haven't seen that recently.

Clint1583,

In craps some bets have a higher probability than others at winning (or if in a casino have a higher probability of losing less).

Same with the car-hire situation on StT. You may get any degree of satisfaction from any agency, but your odds of satisfaction vary from agency to agency.

After reading a lot of bad (and some good) reviews and comments here with Budget, we decided to rent with them anyway simply because they were the cheapest and they are located at the airport. For weeks after reserving, I will admit that I was a little nervous about it. We arrived on a Saturday around 1:30 pm last month, got our luggage and found no one in line. We were in our car within minutes with no problems. We were very happy with Budget.

From what I gather if Budget has a suitable car for you, their fine. The problem is that much more than the other agencies you will arrive at the counter ands they will not have a car available. Less frequently, you arrive and they have a shiny new Yaris for your family of six.

I agree with post #7, we just rented a Jeep from Villa Marbella. Reasonable rates, new vehicle, call them, they have, I think, 22 vehicles available for rent. We loved staying at their Villa too, private, away from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte Amalie. They picked us up at the airport and dropped us off at Red Hook for our week in St. John. Loved it there!

There's no rental car company here called Villa Marbella and that link brings up a villa on Spain's Costa de Sol - oops!
