Waterlemon Cay-currents and swimming distance?

We are wondering about snorkelling at Waterlemon Cay in St John without a guide or vehicle (hoping to taxi there from Cruz bay).

Do most people rent a boat to get there and/or is there a place to leave your dry goods (beach bag, towels, etc) while you snorkel?

It might be that I am completely misinterpreting the information about snorkelling at Waterlemon Cay.

Would appreciate some advise from those who have snorkelled there.

Thanks

You can take a taxi to Leinster Bay and then hike about 25-30 minutes. It's flat and pretty easy, just watch where your walking to avoid twisting an ankle or stepping in donkey sh*t. Hike as far as you can along the shoreline (you'll know when). Leave your beach bag there while you snorkel out to the Cay. Don't take anything of value. If you take food, make sure it is in a cooler or a zipped up bag or the mongooses will eat your lunch while you're in the water! You will have to make arrangements with the taxi driver to come back to get you at a certain time as taxis don't run out there on any regular basis.

or: You can rent a dinghy in Cruz Bay and head there. It's pretty far and can be rough. We have rented one, but have never gone that far. And it's very difficult to get back in it because you can't take it to shore. You have to tie up to a mooring ball.

I'd take the taxi. You will be able to see from the road if it is too rough to snorkel Waterlemon. If it is, you can go back to another beach. Francis is our favorite, which is near Leinster, but again you need to make arrangements for the taxi to come back to get you.

Taxis are always waiting at Cinnamon & Trunk Bays to take you back to Cruz Bay..

Thank You so much for the specific directions of how to get there and helpful tips as we thought about going last year while at St Thomas but were hung up on the particulars about how we would not only get there but manage our belongings etc if going to St John and making a day of it.

Now it seems pretty straight forward and I am looking forward to trying it out.

thanks

Are you renting a vehicle on STT? If you are (anybody but Hertz), you can take the car barge over to STJ and explore on your own. Definitely worth it as opposed to taking the people ferry and then taxis on STJ.

To clarify about the hike. Part of the trail will take you though the woods/trees. When you get to the Johhny Horn trail (there will be a sign), stay to the left and that will put you back to the shoreline. Keep walking until you see the large rock. You can hike past there if you want, but that's where the hike gets more like rock climbing. The snorkeling along the shoreline there, out towards the point is pretty good too. Be careful of the current, especially as you get near the point.
