Frenchman's Cove - questions

I'm considering a week at the Frenchman's Cove timeshare property in early April. Our most recent trip was to Aruba last year, with kids ages 7 & 5 - we enjoyed the Marriott Ocean Club, and I'm curious how the Cove might compare.

1. I've heard the beach at the Cove is somewhat limited, but that the beach at the Marriott hotel next door is nicer. Is that the case? How close is it - walkable, and apparently there is a shuttle?

2. We found it enjoyable to rent a car while in Aruba to enable use to get around, get to restaurants, etc. Is that recommended in St. Thomas? How are the restaurants in general? Better to take a cab?

3. Is the Cove currently under construction? The property map seems to indicate that a good amount is, including what looks like a children's playground. When is the construction scheduled to be finished, and are any of these amenities open while they're working on it?

Answers to these questions, or any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Have never stayed at Frenchman's Cove, but did stay down the hill at the Marriott Morningstar Beach for 3 years (2008-2010). You will not be able to walk along the beach from the Cove to Morningstar (like you could walk along Palm Beach in Aruba). Morningstar Beach is fine (and probably nicer than the Cove) - we enjoyed walking out of our room right onto the beach, but the beach is not as nice as some other STT beaches (Sapphire, Secret Harbor, etc.) or certainly STJ beaches. You can take the Marriott shuttle down to Morningstar.

Definitely rent a car on STT - even more reason than renting on Aruba. In Aruba, at least you were able to walk to restaurants, shops etc. from the Marriott (we have stayed at the Marriott Stellaris resort as well as the Hyatt several times). In STT, you really cannot walk anywhere, so you will want to be able to drive yourself to restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, beaches, and explore this beautiful island. I have been to STT/STJ about a dozen times and have always rented a car.

IMO, there are great restaurants in both STT and Aruba, and some mediocre places as well. Tripadvisor reviews will help you narrow it down in this regard.

Realize Aruba and St Thomas couldn't be more different for many reasons, but for different reasons happen to be our favorite islands (actually for us, STJ is our favorite, followed by STT and Aruba), and the only islands we frequent in the Carribean.

Have a great time!
