Car rental ??

Travelling to St. Thomas in July 2006. Staying at Wyndham Sugar Bay for a week. Should we rent a car or taxi each time (2 adults, 2 teenagers) We will want to go to a few beaches, downtown for shopping, take a charter boat trip to BVI. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks...

Just returned from St. Thomas. We had a rental car but found it difficult to park it! The taxis charge by the person so you can really add to your vacation cost with four people if you plan to go to a lot of places. We left the car behind when we made our run to St. John, and we paid $20 round trip from the hotel to the ferry at Red Hook (2 people), I think the ferry set us back another $16, round trip to Trunk Bay from the ferry on St. John was another $24, so the transportation bill added up. We took the car into Red Hook in the evenings to have dinner and made a run to Coral World and Coki Beach another day. We paid $39 a day for the rental. We were glad it was a small car because the roads are narrow and winding - wouldn't want to try to negotiate the roads in anything very big!!!

Luv, we enjoy having a car. Much more freedom. Just remember to drive on the left, and look out for the chickens pecking near the edge of the road.

Have fun!

Surely rent a car as you will want to explore other places on the island. We just returned from our most recent trip to the island and stayed right next to Sugar Bay. Do not keep yourself confined to the resort, as there is so much more to St. Thomas. We paid around $200 for an 8 day rental, and I booked on orbitz.

No doubt, rent a car. The freedom of having one is great. You will save money over taking taxi's and you will be free to go wherever you want whenever you want. It cost us about $200 for a week for our Hertz car at the airport. Parking was only a problem 1 time, when we went shopping in CA and there were 3 ships in. We still found a spot but had a little walk. Driving on the left side of the road was no problem at all. The roads were narrow but if you drove sensibly it is no problem. The taxis were plentiful but looked uncomfortable and hot (and expensive). They charge you per person per trip, minimum of about $6, so a family of 4 will be about $24 to $40 each time you go anywhere. The taxis were just open air benchs in the backs of pickup trucks. Definately rent a car. You mentioned a trip to BVI, we went on New Horizons 2 and LOVED it.
