Snorkeling and place to stay

Hi, this is probably somewhere in the forum. But we would like to go to St Croix in March and are looking for a modest condo or house that meetsthe followong criteria:

1.) Good Beach snorkeling

2) clean ,but not necessarily luxurious. Simple is good.

3)Has a kitchen

4) There would be 8 of us

5) Off the beaten path

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

There aren't as many options on the Fredricksted side of the island. We stayed as the Cottages by the Sea. Per your list:

1. Beach snorkeling - On the plus side, the beach and water on the leeward side of the island is usually calm and clear. There isn't a reef, but I a few rocks for coral to stick to and fish to hang around. I was actually pleasantly surprised that there was anything at all. But, it is certainly more of a sandy beach than a snorkeling beach.

2. Clean and simple - Probably the Cottages strongest point. It's not a resort. The cabins are modest, but nice. The price is great and the hosts very accomodating.

3. Kitchen - yes.

4. 8 of us - depending what you are looking for this could be a bit of a problem. Most of the cabins fit 2-4 people. Check out their web site and if you have questions, e-mail them.

5. Off the beaten path - Fredricksted is the quiet/less developed side of the island. The Cottages is on the main beach road about half mile from town. I wouldn't call it 'off the beaten path' but you'll likely have the beach to yourselves (and the other Cottages guests). Maybe 10-20 people at any give time.

6. You didn't ask, but it wouldn't be full-disclosure if I didn't mention the sunsets. Spectacular - nothing like holding your own-made drink in one hand and your wife's in the other as the sun hits the water.

The underwater reef is amazing snorkeling...however you have to take a boat ride out to it...well worth it though.
