Rainy Season

We are only able to go to Tobago during the rainy season (August) and are scared of the rain ruining our vacation. Has anyone gone during this period? How bad is the rain?

I guess you are going Aug. 07? We went Aug. 06 & had 8 sunny days out of the 9 we were there. Every day was a beach or pool day. Sometimes a cloud would pass & there would be a little rainshower and then it would be sunny again (great for rainbows!). Some nights (around midnight - 4am) there would be drenching rainstorms but by daybreak, it was over & by 10 - 11 am everything was dry. In contrast, on the exact same days we were getting sunburned on the beach - Trinidad was being flooded by thunderstorms. The storm clouds seem to float right over Tobago & stall over Trinidad. The same week we were in Tobago enjoying sunshine, the road to Maracas Beach in Trinidad was washed out b/c of heavy rain & trees were uprooted. So you can't compare the two. There was even some hurricane threatening to strengthen in the Caribbean that week & we saw no evidence of it & we flew home north with no delay or turbulence or anything.

Locals there said this was a pretty standard "rainy season" much like the ones they've been experiencing for a few years now so I don't think it was unusual.

Good Luck & enjoy the breathing room as other tourists stay away from the Caribbean in August.

When I lived there, spent a couple of July/ Augusts and actually now prefer rainy season over dry season.....everything is lush and green and flowering.....as opposed to brown and dry and nothing. Like previous poster....the clouds seem to sail over Tobago and stall in Trinidad. I can only remember a couple of days in those two years where it almost rained the whole day.......which is sometimes welcome in the hot temps. The rain is always warm and nice....so enjoy and don't worry.

You will actually enjoy the rain. Its warm. If you are it the beach, its perfect to cool you down. Remember you can still get sun burn on an overcast day. If its get a little cold, then just take a dip in the warm water until the cloud passes. Rain showers generally last about 1 hour in tobago. It Trinidad when the ITCZ is active, it can rain all day.

Don't let the rain ruin you vacation. Just walk with some plastic bags to keep your cloths dry.
