Jet Skis

Heads up guys. The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture sent a letter to the Bequia Tourism Association intimating they are going to allow jet ski use throughout SVG. The letter asked for feedback on the idea although it is clear from the wording of the letter that they have already made their mind up to allow the use of jet skis as 'a valuable contribution to develop our tourism product'. Letter is copied below.

Dear Sir,

As a means of diversifying the marine tourism product, the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture is presently considering the introduction of jet skis as a watersport activity and also to facilitate in the patrol of the waters throughout the destination.

Although covered under the Power Craft Act, the importation of jet skis is currently prohibited under the Supplies Control Act. The Ministry is cognizant of the importance of collaborating with stakeholders to ensure that all the necessary parameters are established for the smooth and safe operation of this craft.

To this end, the Ministry is inviting your feedback/ recommendations with respect to the introduction of this craft, inclusive of the following:

- Designated beaches

- Speed limit - operational distance from the shore

- Safety Guidelines

Anticipating your valuable contribution as we continue to develop our tourism product.

Best regards,

You can show your support (or not) by emailing bequiatourism@vincysurf.com or the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture direct at tourism@gov.vc

P.S. Please CC the BTA if you do email the Ministry direct so they can keep a tally of those for and against.

Noisy & intrusive. So much for a quiet relaxing time on the beach or anywhere along the waterfront.

Hope this doesn't happen. Would be willing to sign a petition if that might help.

Some points we could make if we write (and I hope we all do):

- this proposal affects the whole of SVG from beautiful Wynne Bay to Lower Bay, Saltwhistle Bay and the Cays.

- SVG is one of the few places in the world that actually bans jet skis. That attracts a whole different class of tourists – interested in the environment and natural activities like sailing and hiking instead of staying ‘on resort’ and playing with toys.

- compare the peace of SVG beaches to, say, the west coast of Barbados!

- jet skis are not only noisy and dangerous, but their commercial operators promote a beach boy sales culture that is aggressive, harassing, and often involves petty drug dealing.

- Bringing in jet skis adds to the access and getaway opportunities the evil-minded have to rob yachts and beach front homes/rental houses/apartments.

- have you ever seen or heard tourist complains that there are no jet skis? On TA, the complaints I have seen are the inability of law enforcers to crack down on petty thievery from yachties and land-based tourists, on ecological problems, and on the customs/immigration bureaucracy. Jet skis? Really?

- how could jet skis help security? Really?

- where is the proof to support the suggestion that reversing the ban on importing jet skis would enhance security or increase tourism revenue or visitor numbers. Such a major policy reversal needs to be based on evidence and research, not this kind of bland assertion.

I just sent them this:

Good afternoon,

I have heard from various sources that you are considering allowing the use of jet skis in Wynne Bay to Lower Bay, Saltwhistle Bay and the Cays. This would be a foolish and short sided act.

The one reason to allow the noisy, polluting water crafts do not out weight the impact they will have in the future. These areas of the Caribbean are very special; the tourist that visit these islands are also very special.

I had never been to any tropical place before going to Bequia for the first time in 2006. What kept me from going to any tropical island before this was the high rises, the hawkers hassling beach goers, the water-sports, and mostly commercialism and the people who go on vacation only to have all of their comforts met as if they were still at home.

To treat Bequia as just another island would be a desecration of the island and its history. Please have pride in the special type of tourism you provide, the protection of your waters and reefs and the welfare of your people. Money does not buy happiness.

Thank you for your time,

Toronto, Canada

What's behind this wooly-headed idea ? What business or property owner has asked for it. Jacks bar?? Bequia Beach Hotel ? Who? Come on and state your case. If none of the island business wants it then I suggest you collectively present your opposition to the gov't because you will be the losers if it goes through
