Day Trip From Nevis To St. Kitts / Need a car for Nevis?

I've been looking all over this forum and can't seem to find a topic about leaving Nevis for the day to go over and tour St. Kitts.

We're a family of 4 (staying at the Four Seasons) who want to check out St. Kitts. Are there any fun things to do there that we can't do on Nevis? We like to Snorkel and hike and have heard about monkeys on St. Kitts? We don't want to be on a tour bus all day (we are bringing two teenagers). We like the more private excursions.

What do you recommend doing and seeing over there?

Also, should we rent a car while staying at the Four seasons? We like to go out to different places for dinners and thought it might be cheaper to have a car than to take a taxi.

Please help! Thanks!

Ok here's the scoop!

St. Kitts is definitely worth a day trip. The best way to do it is to hire a taxi once you get there for a private tour of the island. There will be plenty of taxis waiting at the ferry dock in Charlestown. You'll pay around $25/hour for the tour (with a 3 hour minimum) and the van will comfortable hold your family. You'll see all the places of interest including the Batik Factory and gardens at Romney Manor, the petroglyphs, the Fortress at Brimstone Hill (not to be missed - one of the most impressive in the Caribbean), the black rocks lava flow and perhaps even stop for a leisurely lunch at one of the Plantation Inns (I highly recommend Otley's Plantation), then you'll drive to the beaches on the southern peninsula where you can swim or stop for drinks at one of the beach bars.

While you might see monkeys during your tour don't worry if you don't - you'll find plenty on Nevis - since you are staying at the Four season simply walk or take one of the golf carts along the golfing trails and you are bound to find monkeys - do this in the early morning or just before sunset as that's when the monkeys are most active.

You should know that snorkeling is not very good around Nevis and St. Kitts - it is "average" at best so don't waste you time snorkeling during your day trip to St. kitts. Instead, take a day sail on one of the Catamarans that leave almost daily from the Four Seasons. The concierge will gladly sign you up - there are half-day and full day sails - both will take you to Shitten Bay off of St. Kitts where you'll find the "best" snorkeling but it is not going to be spectacular. When on Nevis you'll find some moderate snorkeling around the man-made breakwaters at the Four Seasons Resort and there's a small but interesting natural reef about a hundred and fifty feet or so off of Herbert's Beach (the next beach north of Nisbet Beach).

Yes, do rent a car while you are on Nevis. You'll be able to come and go as you please while you fully explore the island and it will be much less expensive than taking taxis around the island.

I have to agree with Caribsurfer. We were in St Kitts a few years ago and took a taxi tour. It was wonderful. We saw all the sights we wanted to see, plus a couple of bonuses - like some nesting egrets and getting up close to a monkey. The driver pulled over so we could get a good look at the egrets and get some photos. Plus, the driver was very knowledgeable about the island and its history. We had a great time on the tour and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Day trip to St. Kitt's is a must. Taxi works well. Don't fret so many monkeys on Nevis. You will also see sheep, goats, donkeys, cows, dogs roaming freely.

Thanks for all the info! Since we'll be in Nevis for a week, is there a preferable day to go to St. Kitts?

There's no "best day" to visit St. Kitts but you'll find more tourists on the island on "cruise ship" days - but never so many that it will feel overly crowded.

You can check the cruise ship schedules on either of the following websites: www.portzante.com/cruise-schedule.asp
