Totally depends on personal preference. Hubby and I always rent cars on the islands because we love to explore on our own. My husband is very used to driving on the left side of the road with the steering wheel on the right (in St. Kitts, we noticed some cars have the steering wheel on the right and some on the left). However, driving around the island is definitely not for everyone! There is basically one main road that circles the island and it can be pretty hairy when passing through the small villages where the road gets quite narrow and there are cars parked on both sides. There are lots of steep curves, potholes, areas in dire need of pavement and often animals in the road. But we enjoy the adventure! Just came back from the Marriott and rented from Hertz - they have cars at the hotel so you don't have to worry about airport pickup and dropoff. Taxi fare from airport to Marriott is $16 (US) for up to four people.

There are a few places within walking distance - Ritual's coffee shop (great for breakfast and half the price of the Marriott), Rock Lobster for dinner, an Indian restaurant that got good very good reviews but which we didn't try. The is also a pizza place (didn't try) and Italian Restaurant Ciao which we thought was terrible. It's about a 5 minute drive to the beach shacks on the strip where we had some of the best fresh fish ever - some people don't mind the walk, but I personally can't walk more than 2 blocks in the heat and humidity. Remember that it gets dark very early (by 7:00) so if you don't want to tackle the challenging roads in the dark (we didn't), you need to have dinner early or eat nearby by or take a taxi.

We rented at Avis and for sure you will spend time dodging pot holes. Also be aware that monkeys, goats, or cows can be in the road at any time. Also there's only one traffic light on the island everything else is roundabouts. The locals drive like maniacs. But despite all this it's fun driving and you'll see a lot of things you won't see taking a cab.

Where is the traffic light in St. Kitts? Never saw one.

Not all locals drive like maniacs. The local bus drivers tend to drive fast and will pass you as they take passengers to and from work.

Having a car will definitely give you more freedom. Great way to see the island and check out the beaches on the southeast peninsula.
