St. Kitts or St. Martin?

We are trying to decide which island to vacation at. We went to the Sonesta Mahon in St. Martin last year.... enjoyed the island. However, they do not have much of a beach to speak of. We are taking friends who will be travelling to the Caribbean for the first time. They would like to be able to walk out of their rooms, and walk the beach, snorkle, etc. some nightlife, but not every night. We would be thinking of standard rooms at the Marriott - Eurpean plan.

Can anyone give us advice on this?? Thanks

joan

Hi Joanmonster,

Every year we go to St.Kitts, most of the time we go the first week of Aril.We go with a group of about 8-12. The Marriott is wonderful. I have been to ST.Martin also.

I like St.Kitts better the food and hositality are great. We usually go out on the Windjammer cruise for the day, they have great snorkling and a wonderful private beech

with a delicious BBQ and drinks (all included) The beech is over on Nevis. Also visit the 4 Seasons over on Nevis you can get there by Ferry for a couple of dollars.

Just the boat ride on a hot day is great.

The Island is not so commercialized as St.

Martin and the people are alot more friendly.

Good Luck and have fun with what ever you decide to do.

For my first trip - i would recommend St Martin over St Kitts. I went to both islands last year. I stayed at the Marriott on St Kitts and at Grand Case in St Martin. I preferred St Martin to St Kitts. St Martin has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen such as Bair Rouge, ilet Pinel, and Orient Beach. Also, it is the food capital of the Caribbean on the French side.

The Marriott St Kitts was nice too. Very large and with lots of people all of the time. I didn't enjoy the beach because i thought the locals were extremely pushy selling their wares so I ended up hanging by the pool. The only other beach I tried on that trip was in Nevis and it was ok - no comparison to St Martin's beach selection.

I, too, am one who likes to walk out the door and be on the beach. I would highly suggest Timothy Beach Resorts (TBR) over the large, commercial, busy Marriott. You can reach them at www.timothybeachresort.com. They are on the Caribbean at South Frigate Bay Beach - you actually feel like you are in the Caribbean, and not in the middle of the States. There is great snorkeling right from South Frigate Beach or at the neighboring beach South Friars. There is night life right on the beach, if you want it, at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack, www.mrxshiggidyshack.com, (Bonfire Thursday nights, Karaoke Saturday nights) and at the Monkey Bar, or you can have a nice dinner and watch the sunset from your own private balcony. It is the best site to view the "green flash" at sunset that I have ever found. You can also visit the Marriott, which is only a 15 minute walk or very short taxi ride down the road. They have restaurants/bars, a casino, and a dance club. In my opinion, you can stay at TBR and visit the Marriott, and have the best of both worlds. I have been to St Maarten once and St Kitts 4 times... my vote is St Kitts any day. Have fun!

If you are looking for the caribbean feel then stay at Timothy Beach. The beach is nice, the water is calm, and the snorkeling is very good.

We just got back from st. kitts, and while there went to st. matin for a day ( we've been to st. martin before). As soon as we landed in st. martin we said " We should have come back here". Even though st. martin is more built up than st. kitts, it can't compare. We found people in st. Kitts not hospitable at all ( except the rare restaurant owner, staff at hotel...). In general, st. kitts is not ready to be considered a toursit site. many of the places advertised ( monkey bar, mr. shiggety's shack, etc) when we found them, we couldnt believe how primative they were. The area smelled like garbage, the beach was no where close to st. matin ( I didnt go in the water at all). St. martin has one of the best beaches in the world ( Orient Beach). St. Kitts doesnt have that light green water like st. martin, even on the carricbean side. The beach at the marriott was the best, and still not great. The town of Bassaterre is kind of scary along the ferry area, alot of men just hanging out, begging, we saw one urinating into the water from the side walk!

What made our trip great was a wondeful hotel ( Ocean Terrace Inn), some superb restaurants ( Marshalls, Ciao's, Stonewalls, Watterfalls) the fun atmosphere at Turtle Beach, though the beach isn't very nice), and the friends we went with. Nevis is much lusher and feels more civilized.
