Marriott Beach

Is it gone? And what do they plan to do about it before the big Christmas crowd?

I have it on good authority that Santa's sleigh will be loaded down with sand for the Marriott.

Unfortunately there is little that can be done to best Mother Nature. Their location is prone to beach erosion and they installed reef balls years ago to try and mitigate the sand loss. Obviously it is not a foolproof strategy.

The Marriott is scheduled to go under a major renovation. This inlcudes the outside bar, Solana, pool area. Don't know about other areas. Even the staff does not know if it will be started this year . . .there are many concerns (ie demolition insurance during hurricane season, etc,) that come into consideration before they can even think of arranging dates. If the plans include pulling back how far the built up area between the beach and the building extends, they will gain more beach. If you are talking about Christmas a year away, it might be all done! With regard to Chrismas crowds, all the hotel beaches are mobbed at Christmas time. Not all travelers care about this number of people on any beach -- all have different passions and sitting in the sun isn't for everyone. Give me a dive boat anyday! As T mentioned, Santa is usually very forthcoming at that time of year!

Just left there yesterday, rooms are already being renovated in the south wing (very nice!), sand reclamation is scheduled for Oct ( beach is virtually nonexistent, you will see one row of chairs against the wall at low tide onlyvs 4 rows just months ago), and other renovations are also slated for this fall.

Beautiful resort and we can't wait to return.

The beach at the condo next door (in front of the Comfort) has been sandbagged to prevent immediate failure and they are spreading sand over the bags. Very unfortunate situation for the south end of SMB. From the Reef Grill north the beach is good. You will want water shoes for beach entry in front of the Marriott.
