SMB is about 5 1/2 miles long so you are never far from a good spot. A great spot is Gov's Reef in from of the Gov's house nearer to the Westin. We stayed by the Hyatt property for many years and although spend the day diving do snorkel as well. In the totally sandy areas we have seen rays, turtles, etc. Where you have vegetation and corals and rocks, you get beautiful smaller guys who need protection. You won't be disappointed -- where are you thinking of staying? Check out caymanislandsdiscounts.com/OffshoreSnorkeling

Skier Ron,

We left Grand Cayman this morning after a week at the Grand Caymanian which is on the North Sound near the Ritz and the Safe Haven Golf Course. This was our third visit to the island.

We have snorkeled a few different locations on Seven Mile Beach. Being chickenhearts, we have stuck to places that looked easy and safe. There probably are better places but these are the ones we like.

This year we snorkeled at the beach across the street from the Marriott Courtyard. We like beaches with restaurants and rest rooms where you can rent chairs and stuff and the snorkeling is close to the shore. The coral is not as exciting as some other places but there were plenty of fish to excite our first-time snorkeler friends that went with us.

The reef near the Stingray City sand bar provided a nice variety of coral and fish as well. I would classify this as a beginner snorkel although a little more advanced than the one by the Marriott. it is only accessible by boat.

We have snorkeled at "Cemetary Beach" in previous years and like it a lot. We saw a good variety of coral and plenty of fish. We did not go there this year.

We have also snorkeled at the reef near the Christopher Columbus house and liked that as well.

We have been told that the snorkeling of the Grand Caymanian dock is good, but with the wind steady out of the northeast, the north sound was too choppy for us except, fortunately, on the morning we went to Stingray City with Cayman Divers.

The short answer is wherever you stay on Seven Mile Beach, good to great snorkeling is only a short walk away.
