How soon to book car rental?

Embedded into my head when visiting the St. John forum was “book your rental vehicle asap” – demand is more than supply. Is this the case on VG as well?

Thanks much.

When do you plan on going? I can only speak for off season when we visit. It is fairly easy. VG has less visitors than St John by far and many times less villa rentals.

Thanks for your reply. We are planning on going In-Season. Last year we did our “dream” vacation and this year is our “budget” vacation – if you can say budget and Caribbean in the same sentence. We found a reasonable place to stay in/near Spanish Town. To keep costs down our thoughts are to rent a vehicle for 3 days to visit the northern side (BEYC, Prickly Pear, Biras Creek, hike Gorda Peak, snorkel, etc) and the remaining days taxi. Looking at the taxi rates to/from around the Valley look very reasonable and less expensive than car rental. Examples that I have read online: taxi to/from Mahoe is $20.00 round trip for 2 and Savannah Bay would be $16.00.

We will certainly reserve a vehicle for the 3 days in advance but wondering if we want to extend the rental what are our chances in doing so?

Sorry for my long drawn out question – but more info is better – I think :)

Also, thanks for the very informative link – would have never guessed that we will need to purchase a temporary driver’s license.

If you will be staying during "peak" in season, i.e., Christmas thru New Year, car rentals may be a bit more difficult to extend, and I suggest checking ahead of time with the rental agency. You can save some $ by using taxis, etc. Just keep in mind that there aren't phones at the beaches and you may or may not get cell reception. So, you will probably need to pre-arrange the time for a cab driver to pick you up. If you have a good experience with a driver, you might want to keep trying to use him/her for all your taxi needs.

By the way, for car rentals, we've had a lot of good experiences with Mahogany http://www.mahoganycarrentalsbvi.com/
