BVI custom fee

We are taking a ferry St Thomas to Virgin Gorda, then VG to to Tortola to St John.

Where/when do we pay custom fee? How much?

You pay a departure fee of $5.00 per person when you leave. You can pay that fee at the customs building next to the ferry dock on Virgin Gorda before departure to Tortola.

I am sorry, I may not have been clear. You only pay a $5.00 departure fee when leaving the BVI. If you are taking a ferry to Tortola from Virgin Gorda and then getting a ferry from Tortola to St John you will not have to pay a departure fee until you are ready to leave the BVI for the USVI.

Thanks for information.

I was emailed from a water taxi(ferry) service that if even if I paid the $5 fee in VG, there is a $25 BVI custom fee that is mandatory for the ferry trip Tortola to St John.

The ferry services include the $25.00 custom fee in the price of the ticket. A private company usually does not.

Why would there be an additional $25 custom fee?

The response earlier there was only a $5 fee from VG would be due.

Is BVI government custom fee $5, $25 or $30? Can it be paid with CC or cash only?

$5.00 is a "departure tax." The departure tax is $5.00 for a departure by sea, except for cruise boat passengers, who pay $7.00 pp. Departure by air is $20.00pp. The tax may be paid by credit card.

I have never had to pay a "customs fee" (different than a "departure tax") directly. It was always built in. The fee is suppose to be per boat, but some private charters try to use it as a revenue source from what I have read.

If you are using the ferry system you will not have to worry about it.

Here is the email address for the BVI government if you have further questions:
