Getting from STJ to Tortola and returning to St. Thomas

We're in the planning stages for our November trip. Starting out on STJ for week and then a week on Tortola. Getting to STJ is not an issue, however, I'm a little concerned about the return trip. My thought is to take the St. John-Tortola (West End) 3:30pm ferry on Saturday afternoon to get to to Tortola and then to retun to St. Thomas the following Saturday on the 10:30 am ferry for a 3:45 flight out of St. Thomas. Does that sound doable?

We go to St. John every year, but this our first venture into the BVIs and just not sure how things work there. Thanks for any input.

The ferries are pretty reliable but there can be delays so you will want to take the earliest ferry available from West End to be sure to make your flight. You can take a later ferry but just be aware you may encounder a delay. You also have to go through customs on the return, and if you return from WE that will require a stop in Cruz bay. If you return from Road Town you'll go through customs in CA.

We stay on the East End of STT our last couple days to eliminate the early morning ferry and the rush to get to STT. Just another thought, that slso lets us enjoy Red Hook and Latitude 18 our last night there.

But enjoy your time on Tortola, we love staying there to experience the different vibe from the USVI.

Generally speaking, it is less complicated to go to Virgin Gorda first, then St. John. It doesn't really matter if you get to Virgin Gorda later than planned, unlike trying to catch a flight home. So, if possible, I would fly into St. Thomas on one of the days there is a direct ferry to VG. Then move to St. John. Ferrying from St. John to St. Thomas is pretty certain, so you won't waste your last day allowing lots of extra time for the BVI ferries.

I would go to the BVI first because it is easier to get to the airport from STJ for your return trip and then you do not have to worry about making your flight.

2 years ago we took the ferry from WE to Stt and we went through customs in CA we did not go to Cruz Bay. Maybe it has to do with what ferry co you use. We used Smiths. We took the same morning ferry you want to take and had plenty of time in STT to grab lunch before the airport. Trip sounds wonderful... You've got my wheels turning now for our next trip!

Some ferries stop at WE enroute from Road Town to CA.

We like having lunch on the deck at the Petite Pump Room over the ferry terminal. Very nice staff, and a nice view of the bay and planes landing and taking off at the dock.
