where to stay in Tortola

We will be visiting Tortola in March for a week and having a hard time deciding on where to stay. Has anyone stayed at Surfsong Villas Resort - also what about Sugar Mill Hotel. There will be two couples traveling - would appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

I stayed at the Sugar Mill for 4 nights in July 05 with my husband and our granddaughter. We used the package that offers the rental car and we made daily use of it!

We liked the Sugar Mill very much and found the room (ours was a family suite) comfortable and spacious but a bit outdated in decor. Food was excellent, as was the service. We enjoyed ending our days swimming at the protected beach there or at the pool, and the bar area after dinner was quite convivial.

We also liked the location of the Sugar Mill--it was an easy drive to the West End, to Smuggler's Cove, and to Road Town. Brewer's Bay and Beef Island were a bit farther. We could walk to various restaurants from the Sugar Mill, which was nice so we didn't have to worry about drinking and then driving on the left-hand side of the road.

If you like having a spacious apartment with a full kitchen and a great view, check out Agape Cottages in Cane Garden Bay. Their J2 two-bedroom unit is our favorite! Have a great holiday!

Surfsong is on the far east side of the Island by the airport. This is in a less convenient location compared to the Sugar Mill which is on the south side of the island close to nice beaches and interesting night life. So weigh the importance of staying put versus visiting different beaches and having a little easier access to nightlife.

We have been to Tortola several times and find the South side of the island to be a great place to stay. While we have stayed at the Long Bay Resort as well, we prefer the Sugar Mill since it is more intimate and the rooms are nicer/better maintained. Sugar Mill has a very small beach right across the road from the hotel but we did not find this a liability since we rent a jeep and enjoy all the other beaches on the south side of the island including the beach that borders the long bay resort as well as smugglers cove and others.

Sugar Mill has a very good charming restaurant and a relaxing small lunch spot right on the water as well. And other restaurants can be easily reached. For example, for a fun night out, go to Myetts at Cane Garden Bay (open air on the water) when the "Loverboys" are playing (local "Fungi" music), have dinner and drinks there. Of course there is the famous Bomba's which you can walk to from the Sugar Mill...its good for a few laughs and if there is a full moon out, they have this crazy party we have been to...Anyway, enjoy Tortola

With apologies to the previous poster, the Sugar Mill is on the NORTH shore of the island, not the south shore. The south shore overlooks the Drake Channel and Peter & Cooper islands, etc. North shore looks out to Jost, Guana, and the Atlantic. Long Bay Beach Resort, Sebastian's, Sugar Mill, Cane Garden Bay, Brewer's Bay are all on the NORTH shore.

Really depends on what you are looking for. We stayed in Cane Garden Bay in early May and loved it. Had the beach to ourselves for a week, will undoubtedly be busier in March. Stayed at Myett's and it is a great spot. Wonderful food, great happy hours, room # 1 nice and clean and cozy, yet plenty of room (no TV - a real vacation!). Highly recommend Myett's. Check out Kapeye at Myett's for happy hour, he's from our NY state area and plays a variety of music.

Many great reviews also on Mongoose and Lighthouse villas in CGB and we will stay at both of these places as well in the future to compare. All are within walking distance along with Quito's, and Stanley's definitely has the "Cheeseburger in Paradise" right next door to Myett's. Also a small grocery store right there, very handy, prices reasonable. See Glen at the boat rental for a water taxi to JVD and enjoy JVD and Soggy $ Bar and Foxy's and geat restautants there.

We have not stayed at Sugar Mill, although I almost booked it for the package. When we went there for dinner we were not comfortable, very stuffy, and glad we didn't book it. We strolled down the road to Sebastian's (short walk past Bomba's shack) and actually had an excellent dinner at Sebastian's, best we had during our stay.

If you want to enjoy the varety of people in BVI look at CGB, and many good choices there for accommodations. If you are looking for a luxury resort, look at the other islands. Wonderful vacation for us, as we were coming from St Martin and looking for a laid-back place for limin' - we found it in CGB. Don't miss the MineShaft while on VG.

Obviously the way to experience the BVI is by boat, either hiring a captain and chef or sailing alone. But in the meantime we will enjoy Tortola as one of the last islands we've experienced that is not too developed.

Enjoy!!!

The previous post is correct. Cane G. Bay is great. I'll be there again in 10 days, can't wait. If you are low maintenance this is the place. Relax in the sun, have a few drinks , good food and listen to a little live reggae music what could be better. Myetts hotel is very nice along with the lighthouse villas. I have stayed at Rhymers beach hotel. Very basic, but clean. The little fridge in our room got beer just to the ice forming stage, heaven. You have a choice of 4 or 5 restaurants all with some island specialty and live music on certain nights. Myetts Conch fritters were great(spicy). You can always take a day trip to Jost Van Dyke either by ferry from West End or by water taxi right from the beach. The boat rental guy will bring you and pick you up. Have a great trip
