tortola's best beaches

We are heading out to st thomas over thanksgiving, and will be making a day trip to Tortola. We will be renting a car.

We like quiet beaches with beautiful water, and soft sand with no rocks in the water.

We have decided against cane garden bay because we fear it will be a bit too busy for our tastes. We were thinking about driving to smugglers cove to enjoy the quiet there. Does that sound like a good idea? Is it the type of beach our family would enjoy?

Any other suggestions for beaches?

Since you'll be down during a holiday, you can bet you won't find any of the beaches empty. Both tourists and locals bring their families to the beaches, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. As for the beautiful water, soft sand, they all have it. Good swimming with few rocks - Smuggler's, Josiah's Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Long Bay East End (not the hotel on the other end) and Brewer's Bay. Just about any of these will fulfill your appearance qualities. You can try Lambert Bay in the east end which is a once active resort but has a lovely beach, however occasionally rough surf. Again any of these can be empty or packed depending on how many cruise ships are in port and in general where people end up for the day. Cane Garden bay is however the main beach that the cruise ship taxis bring their guests' to, but nonetheless it's a gorgeous beach.

Cheers - Michael

SKuchars,

Michael has given you good suggestions. Renting a car is a good idea. You could try Smugglers: …smugmug.com/gallery/…128633177_PeKEG And, if it seems too crowded, then try Brewer's: …smugmug.com/gallery/…128678297_Cm7Te

Smugglers will have a couple of vendors selling sandwiches and drinks, Brewer's has Nicole's Restaurant that sells some of the best hamburgers on the island.

You'll probably have your best luck with fewer folks at the beaches durnig the week.

If you are adventurous, the gravel road between Smugglers and Soper's Hole has fabulous views, and so does Ridge Road: …smugmug.com/gallery/…128633282_yPyWr

Good advice from the others but there are flys out there for your ointment.

a) Cruise Ships in port. Luckily, there is only one each day around Thanksgiving except NONE on Thurs and Sat. With only 1 in port it may not be a hassle at Smugglers Cover and Brewer's Bay. Cane Garden Bay will be crowded. Obviously, Thurs or Sat are primo.

b) North Swells - lately the swells have been up making all of the beaches on the North Shore rougher than normal. If you encounter this, head straight for Long Bay on Beef Is. This will be the only Tortola beach spared.

I would rent a car from Jerry's (he'll pick you up at the ferry) and head to Smuggler's Cove (approx 15 min and the closest). If the surf is up, head to Long Bay Beef Is. Don't bother with the other North Shore beaches, they'll be worse.

If there is no swell but you get crowds at Smuggler's, go back toward Long Bay Beach Resort (you drove through it going to Smuggler's) park and head to the far west end of the beach. If you don't like this surf, head to Brewer's. If that's crowded, head to Long Bay Beef Is.

OR you could give yourself the best shot at the most beach time and just head straight to Long Bay Beef Is from the start. It's beautiful, but there are no facilities so grab some food & drink and a roll of TP.

My husband and I went to Tortola for our honeymoon and Smugglers was our absolute favorite beach. Getting there on the bumpy road is half the fun and the beach is absolutely gorgeous and easy to swim and snorkel. and loved the little stand with the drinks made from fresh fruit.

Long bay (the one next to the resort) is beautiful as well, but rocky.

Please reconsider Cane Garden Bay. even though it might be busy, the beach is so long you can find your little place in the sun easily. You will also be close to restaurants and facilities. I had a hard time finding any rocks in the calm, wonderful water and went a long way out before being deep. From Myett's Hotel (looking out to sea) head left for seclusion.

Do you know where the cruise ships arrive in relation to Can Garden Bay? We will be on a Princess cruise? Karen59

Ships arrive to Road Town, on the other side of the island. Passengers are bused in "safari cars" - open taxis - and regular taxis (mini-buses) on a steep road through mountains to Cane Garden Bay.

You really want to know??? I can tell you - some call it lava beach, others call it lava flows, but i call it rouge simply because thats what it says on some maps. EASY to get to as long as you have a four wheel drive, the standard suzuki deal will do. one of THE MOST secluded beaches on the island - i've been there countless times and never run into more than two or three people at once. Travelling east on ridge road once you pass mountain top laundromat on your right, there will be a road on your left immediatly after. travel for less than 1/4 mile and the road will split left and right and you take the left - it's really steep but don't be scared its easily manageable. follow it downward, you know you're going the right way if you're going down - you will see the beach at various vantage points off to your left. Finally when you reach the yellow house with red roof you make the finally switchback left onto the firt and take it all the way down to the sand.....
